TS, were you on a self drive trip there?

The photos are amazing.

Yes, we rented a 6-berth campervan and drove around the South island. Definitely the best way to see the country. The landscape was amazing.

Hi DanMan, would you share your itinerary for the trip?
[I have not done a search in CS on this topic before but] I think it is a good idea to have a section or sticky on suggested trip itinerary for destinations where photographers would love to go. - a note for the moderators to consider:think:. I noticed throughout the overseas forum, people asking for suggestions.

Yeah, do share. I plan to do a drive-around in December too and would like to learn from those who have done it.

I spent a total of 14 days in the New Zealand. Wished it was longer... but the cold was getting to me ;p

28. A close-up shot of Mt Cook from the Mt Cook Salmon farm. For sashimi lovers, you must try the fresh salmon there. It's different! We dropped by the farm en-route to Lake Pukaki.

We rented a 6 Berth Deluxe Kea for about NZD 130 per day. Normally you purchase for several days and you top up for better insurance coverage and other facilities to include in the campervan e.g. chairs and table for picnic etc. The campervan was indeed quite an experience, kinda like driving a mini bus. The biggest challenge is always clearing the human waste container :bsmilie:

29. A close up shot of the mountain range in picture 10. Saw this lovely range during a cafe stopover enroute to Lake Tekapo.

Hi,

the NZD 130 is inclusive of extra insurance coverage, chairs and tables? Just wondering, when u stop for the night, hve to find the legal place to park or can just park anywhere. Is there parking fees needed? How's the security over there? coz after all, valuables r all in the car, kena hijack in the middle of the night would be dreadful.

Regarding the human waste and fresh water top up, every town can clear and top up or only certain locations? how much does it cost?

Yes, it includes the extras. We booked our campervan at http://www.fetchcampervanhirenewzealand.co.nz. Daily rate of NZD 96.92 per day. We had an all inclusive package at NZD 50.00 per day. So the daily rate is about NZD 150 (sorry, not NZD 130 as I mentioned earlier).

There are places that you are not allowed to park overnight (there are signs for no campervan parking). Other than that, it is generally safe to park anywhere (of course, no one can guarantee 100% problem free). For the first night, we parked next to a highway. Another night in a shopping mall parking lot (not all paking malls allow overnight parking). For most of the nights, we park at campervan parks. It is in these parks that you get fresh water, dispose waste and hook up to a power point. Without hooking up, there's still electricity for lights and charging your camera batteries :) Hooking up allows you to use the TV, microwave oven and electric heater. The campervan comes with a gas cooker and gas heater which you can use without hooking up. Campervan parks normally charge by per person and it ranges from NZD 30 to 70 depending on the standard and facilities.

There are public places that you can clear your waste, though we didn't see many of them. There's plenty of information on the Internet. You can use http://www.newzealand.com to do your planning. Quite an interesting site. Hope this helps.

If you can drive a normal motorcar here, your license will allow you to drive a campervan. As I mentioned earlier, it drives like a mini-bus. We didn't use any snow chains since we didn't have to drive through snow or icy road. If you go in winter, you might have to.
