Guys,
Today I went funan challenger. One guy quote me k-r + kit lens I (18-55) plus alot freebies like 2x8gb mem cards, cleaning kit uv filter for $999. Is this good price?
In slrr meanwhile, they charge 921 for body + lens only. Actually I'm not sure got include what other things but I know their k-r + 35mm is only inclusive of body + lens, no mem cards cleaning kit all these. So I assume the kit lens bundle I also body and lens only.
Which one is better deal??
Also sidetrack, I was asking between k-r and 550d, was narrowing down my choices to these two. Both shops also stated k-r is better. Lol. Or maybe they say just to earn my business. Lol.
Hi lemonaid, assume that the freebies are entry level memory cards (i.e. not Sandisk Extreme III, let alone Sandisk Ultra II). Not sure if you are aware, you can easily find Sim Lim prices for SD cards online. Two shops that provide price lists are Video Pro and Fuwell.
It is good to learn how to do your homework. Then you can do your shopping quickly, independently, and in some ways, be more streetwise in the long run.
Fuwell doesn't seem to have 8GB SD card listed.
Video Pro 's price list and site is here:

Lists 8GB cards as $17.
Don't know what UV filter they give, prices can range from as low as $12 for 52mm cap for Tianya (bad quality, if you ask me) to $26 for JYC perhaps $30+ (assuming slight price increase up from a quoted $26 in the filter price guide thread).

If you do the math, that adds up to $64 max. A cleaning kit could consist of many things, like a blower, some lens tissues, cleaning cloth, sometimes lens pen. If you think that's worth $14 (making up the $78 difference), then you can buy from Challenger I guess.
Hope you have gained some additional insight into how to compare prices in future.
Anyways, my personal take is that I want faster cards for a pain-free process of transferring to computer. All my existing SD cards are Extreme III (old version), which cost quite a bit more. I don't think the kit lens really needs a UV filter because it is cheap, and frankly speaking I don't think it offers much protection. Unless the cleaning kit is from a good brand, and keeping in mind that the more useful things in the long run might be the blower and the microfibre cloth, it is unlikely that you will get very good copies of either. I have not have had a good experience with lens tissues - too easy to get dirty because of how they are packed; nor Lenspens - too quickly used up, and expensive to keep buying new ones if you shoot a lot.
I would go for the $921 SLR Revolution package, use the $78 to buy 2 sets of good SD cards (4GB will do, if you enforce good discipline when shooting), a good branded blower (Giottos or the Swiss brand, forgot the name), and a good microfibre cloth (3M, for instance). You might exceed $999 a bit, but you'd end up controlling the things you want, and get better versions of them.
Hope this helps.
