New to Pentax

Hello. Im new to pentax too, got a k-x a few weeks ago. new to photography in general too, so I hope you guys dont mind if I ask questions here :)

Post a thread with your questions and we will be happy to answer ;)

Hi

i am thinking of getting a slr and have read many good reviews about Pentax Kr. I went down to Funan Centre and was almost certain of getting it.

After visiting a few stores, most stores have kinda of discouraged us to buy Pentax. they cited that the Pentax service is no good and the compatible 3rd party lens are hard to find, even the original lens are limited. In fact, 2 of them said that they will be dropping the brands and will not be selling them anymore.

I was kinda of lost after the visit ... should I still go for the Pentax kr or considered my other 2 options ....

Can anyone advise on the Pentax service and lens availability .... Thank guys.

Same thing happen, 10 or 15 years ago try buying a Hyundai car and everyone will tell you the same things above, service no good, no compatible 3rd party parts, and etc so take a look on our roads today and see how easily you can spot a Hyundai.

It's fair assumption that you are not hearing the truth, but you can see from this forum itself that when it comes to lens... it's not short of supply but rather if you have enough money to indulge in LBA. As for service, since Emjay took over, there are more compliments and praises going around rather then complaint... but don't take my word for it, just do a search and you'll get your answer.

Should have read the forum before you go shop hunting . . .

Pentax DSLRs have a distinct advantage to the other as the K-mount goes back to the early 70s.

The new distributor has been very great and service is also great.

Go to shops like Orient Photo (SLS), SLR Revolution (Funan) and Manly (Temple Street, Chinatown)

I went to PS at Holland V and Cathay Photo at Peninsula. Both dun recommend me to buy K-R. Also said they the servicing is a problem and that they will stop carrying the brand. That really shaken my confidence a little. Did went to SLRR but it was jamed pack with ppl so i left to check out other stores. However, service at Cathay Photo was good and was recommended afew other models which i had short listed. At Funan,Mini Challenger service was also quite good and was able to try out the K-R which i have been trying to get a actual hands on feel.

Servicing is a problem? Emjay does a good job what..

I remember when i was encountering problems with my K-r, i went to this forum and tried asking the people here. People here were warm and helpful, when i login to clubsnap the following day, i found out that a guy from Emjay has pm me with regards to the problem and was helpful and keen to resolve that issue. Very good experience with them.

Thanks guys for the wonderful input and recommendations. I am leaning towards Pentax and happy to know that emjay is doing a good job in servicing.

Cheers

Bro, just to share my 2 cents

I think we are lucky to have the current distributor, so far i have only heard good things and they are pretty responsive and also mingle with us. That is a big selling point, when will you ever see the hunchos from the canon or nikon camp to come down at our outing or workshops or even sponsor prizes for the various contest.
These personal touch is what makes them different.

Specs for specs, the current pentax line up are superior to the competitors. The current lens lineup is of course lesser than canon or nikon, but we must ask ourselves, what lens we really need and for those which i need, can pentax provide the solution? If yes then there is no holding back.
I dun think we will like to spend all the $ to collect each and every lens out there by canon or nikon but rather those which suits you.

So far, i am pretty aligned to pentax due to their small form factor and compactness. I reaffirmed this when i got a chance to try my company D300 with a 18-200 lens. Just cannot tahan the weight, so i think as long as pentax is keeping the current philosophy of small form + substance, will continue to support it. =)

Hope you join us soon =)

Cathay Photo and Holland are Canikon areas so of course they tell you Pentax service no good. But we as Pentaxians will tell you that Emjay is great and its service is even greater

Considering the current 2 cameras by pentax, one (k-r) in entry level, another (k-5) in midrange-pro (APS-C)
Both are the ruler of these 2 categories and awarded multiple titles by different websites and reviews.

As for customer service, those shops are making most money from canikons, of course they have every reason out there to discourage u to go the pentax way.

One truth i must tell, it can be hard sometimes to find a certain specific lens for pentax, especially third party ones, but worst case is that you'll be pre-ordering and wait for few days to weeks.
Personally, unless u're going really pro and need those top of the line lenses and you want them brand new, pentax actually do have more lenses than you need/can afford.

many thanks for the confidence booster! Mind is getting clearer now :)

One of the pleasant and unexpected things about Emjay is the small volume of pentax users. It means that they are freer and accessibility to the service guys is much easier.

I've sat in service centres for stuff like Philips products and really had to wait long time to meet dour looking service personnel who only see you as a number and another problem.

Believe me there is much to be said for having an efficient agent for a "low volume" product.

Somehow i don't think there is much lacking in lenses. Harder to find, no doubt, but not lacking in variety nor impossible to get.

currently just starting to pick back the use of dslr ... used to have a Sony F828 .. recently just went into retirement.

I share the same sendiments too .. can really sense that they are Canikons .. LOL

As for other lenses, let me master the basic foundations first .. then I will think of them.

cant emphasize enough the draw of the Pentax community in sg as a pillar of strength of this brand. I bought a K100D during the last dreadful distributor period but my experience with the brand did not suffer because of the friendly community and Kelvin the super friendly service staff that had migrated to the new distributor.

my photography journey would not be as enjoyable as it is now if not for this group of people. within our community we have consistently over the years organise outing (monthly) and software learning classes. A lot of times when i shouted out for help, unconditional assistance was very forth coming. of course, you must be warned that the poison of buying more and more lenses and newer version of camera body is very strong here. ;)

advance welcome to the community. members used to get a free T-shirt (with a small admin fee) but i dont know whether this is still a practice now

considering getting a KR within the next few days/weeks. one query i wana ask is whether it is advisable to buy it overseas as it seems cheaper.
my only concern is the warranty as i am not sure if it is international?

Cos the KR model i am eyeing online comes with 18-55mm kit lens is really a steal at sg$200 off SLRR price after including shipping and GST.

Other freebies include:
wide angle lens
telephoto lens
16GB sd memory card
multi card reader
full size tripod
filter kit
soft case
table top tripod
lens cleaning kit
lcd screen protector

appreciate ya thoughts n comments. :)

i would buy local for the assurance of local warranty cos u just never know with online purchases.

in the worst case scenario, u have to factor in return shipping in case u get a lemon set or if it gets damaged during shipping.

that's added cost and headache.

i'm not a big fan of freebies... more often than not, they're junk.

I usually advocate buying locally if the price diff is not too great.
But $200 difference is around the tipping point for me to be worth the hassle of buying overseas.
I guess its at the risk of warranty.....
You sure its $200 diff?
