it finally has the rotary dial like the canon ... =) but sadly it seems like the power switch is still a push hold button ... which I think is not userfriendly .. :(

and seems like D700 is finally coming soon !!! ;) ... but I reckon it's going to be quite expensive ... :(

that means there'll be influx of people dumping their D300 !!! :D .... but I guess not so soon ... :(

Great news !! I'm planning to buy a flash and seems like my wait is worth it :D
Till more reviews:)

hooray! no more ugly PC clear press pad at the back...
switching master / remote / on / off!
Firmware upgrade via hotshoe not compatible with D300?!
Hope it caps at $800...

Depends whether you shoot FX or DX. When people start going FX, then they will start to realise how expensive FX is going to be. Just remember not to expect too much out of FX lenses. In digital age, with the ability to see pixel for pixel on the monitor, a 12MP is equivalent to a 42" x 28" print.... way beyond what 135 film users would usually print (16"x20").

Many lenses made in the past for 135 film are not as sharp as what we would expect them to be now. To reinvest in digital lenses like the new 14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8 would be very expensive. It's cheaper to stay in DX with lenses like the 17-55/2.8 DX. You'd still get 12MP with D300.

I've done comparison using D2X with 17-55/2.8 DX against Angenieux 28-70/2.6 (a highly acclaimed lens then) on D3 and I was really disappointed with the result the lens is able to produce on the D3. The coma and optical aberrations was quite bad and the lens was so soft wide open that you could even see the softness in the image resized to 640x423. The corners were also not as sharp. The 17-55 performed much better on the D2X.

Looks like a fury of new products Nikon is pushing recently
Now we can all retire our SB800 as slaves :bsmilie:

Thanks for sharing. Just like the beginnings of DX, we need to wait for the Nikon FX market to mature for some time before we get good lenses to deliver the sharpness that DX has established over the decades. And by then, I trust Nikon would have released new DSLRs with higher pixel counts. And the cycle goes on and on... haha

i have been shooting ff for decades (ff not fx)
if you do not pixel peep all the previous lenses are sharp enough
add in photoshop to the equation ...

hmmmm ...this means SB700 coming soon ??....

Anyone knows what is the GN when zoomed to 200mm? Think it should be much higher than the SB 800 zoomed to 105mm right?

1 think i can think of is that it will be really good for birding....

Get ready for question like should I get the SB900 or SB800.:bsmilie:

Looks like canon flash

Haya! Technology is like that...
Today come SB900, Tomorrow SB1000...
Never ending...:nono:

Me, may dump both SB800s for a pair of SB900s if the price is right. I think the price of the SB900 may be around $900-$1K.

Please PM me when you about to dump.

Million thanks!!!;p

I hardly use flash, but whenever I use my almost 3yr old SB800, I know it will give me correct exposure. and I dont find any limitation on my SB800 so far. So it will stay with me for a long long time.

What you want may not be what you need. Blindly chasing over technology is no difference from falling into marketing techniques.

well maybe we all need our own ego, so i guess they were marketing the 'need' all along. lol.

filter detection, firmware update via hotshoe LOL! always wanted that 180degree left right turn. It's looks huge though. That makes the SB-800 become as useless as the SB600 if it's only gonna be used for CLS...

Good to see nikon still coming up with useful innovations for their already best of bred portable flashes

Not sure about N's claim of being first to offer firmware upgrade from the hotshoe though... Olympus already had that in 2004 with their E-1 and FL-50.
