Ok back to the topic.
I was reading Thom Hogan comments on the coming "new cameras" . There are really good hints on that what is coming soon but also in the next 6 months or so.
Basically if I read correctly this is my speculation:
The FF coming soon, let say "D3" will probably to compete in the 1DMKIII range ie. not only in specs but also in pricing with the advantage of FF (no need to mention 5D, it is nowhere near it). Looks like the rumoured specs of 12MP for the FF D3 is correct and it is the high speed camera, like the previous H series is made to be.
The D300 will probably outrun the 40D
More interestingly is the mentioned of a high resolution follow-up of the camera ie to compete in the 20mp range will be out next year. Which is the low speed but high MP more in direct competition with the 1DsMIII in specs and price
Lets see how it goes if indeed tomorrow is the rumoured press conference as mentioned in dpreview forum.
here's the extract from Thom:

"Unfortunately, if I'm right about which prototype is being introduced this week, the Canon/Nikon pro user debates will continue unfettered.
That's because Canon will up the 1DsII from 16mp to 21mp this week, and Nikon will be once again stuck facing the "fewer pixels" complaint from some users (because they're comparing the wrong camera with the wrong camera).
But if you go back and read my roadmap, the high resolution follow up camera from Nikon isn't expected until the middle of next year (and the about-to-be-announced high-speed pro camera is following at about the predicted interval, especially if it doesn't ship until later this fall).
Thus, the fireworks are probably not over yet--Nikon appears to be about six months behind Canon in announcing new pro cameras this time, but appears also to be clearly matching or exceeding them this time around (again, making some assumptions about image quality). I can wait six months. "
