SG$1284 sounds pretty good. I bought mine in Thailand and paid more (converting to UK pounds). Depending on fluctuating exchange rates there are times when it is cheaper to buy in Thailand, and times when it is cheaper to buy in Singapore. However, I bought my extension tubes in Singapore and got a good saving compared to Thailand.

The new EF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro - fortunately - has none of the autofocusing problems I experienced with my original EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro. The original lens was good for macro, but whenever I used it for telephoto my shots were OOF. I sold it.

The new lens is proving to be a good all-rounder. I still need to do lots of work on my macro technique but macro shots with extension tubes have been satisfactory so far. I'm not sure about hybrid IS though. I find that macro work needs a tripod, so switch IS off.

The IS works well when using the lens as a telephoto. Sharpness, colour, contrast and bokeh are all fine. To be honest though, my humble little EF 85mm f/1.8 performs just as well, if not slightly better, for portraits.

Overall I'm pleased with it. Some sample images and more thoughts at the following link (which I am in the process of updating):

PhilUKNet; glad you liked it bro! (you should ;))

btw, what & where did you bought your ET?

Hello engmariano

I assume you mean Extension Tubes (ET)? I bought Canon originals - EF 25mm II and EF 12mm II - from Parisilk in Holland Village.

I checked prices in Thailand before my trip and converted to Singapore dollars. The prices were $129 for the 12mm and $237 for the 25mm.

Parisilk's prices were $75 and $154, respectively, which was quite a big saving.

Hi engmariano, I'm having problems posting so this may appear more than once.

This week I will be trying to find suitable subjects to photograph with my new macro gear!

will the AF speed increase with IS off?
tinking of getting one ( 1 stone kill 3 birds, :) indoor sports, macro and portraits)

AF speed will not increase with IS off. AF is not fast on this lens. But focusing is definitely tack sharp when it get the right focusing on the subject!

Hi, where is the best shop to buy this lens now? How much is it? Thanks!
I want to buy one;)

Just shot with this lens last night mounted to a 1Ds and atop a tripod. had to turn the darned IS off as the gyro kept going and going

IF you're using this mostly for macro and/or close up work with a tripod, you'll be better off with the regular non-IS 100/2.8 macro at a lower price point

That is a surprise to me. I thought these new IS/VR units stop functioning automatically once the camera is tripod mounted.

Anyway, I got this lens so that I can shoot macro withOUT tripod. Tripod based macro shooting is not very practical in Singapore 'cos most bugs here are very jittery. :bsmilie:

HI Guys

May I know is there huge different in weight between IS n non IS 100mm marco lens?

i wanna buy one, where is the best price? ;)Thanks!

Just saw your post and did a quick test. No issues with IS while tripod mounted, it just turned itself off and did not try to stabilise the image that was already stable. Your 100L's IS is too hardworking.

Hi everyone,

Are there any shops around that sells a compatible third party tripod collar for this macro lens? If yes how much is it? Cheaper than Canon originals? Thanks!

Thought you may want to know this: the NEW Kenko 1.4x Pro300 DGX teleconverter works really well with the 100 IS macro lens. :) Single shot AF is pretty nifty although AF servo suffers.

Note that you must get a copy from the new batch. Kenko also produced older batches of the same teleconverter which cannot AF properly with the 100 IS macro lens and fails to AF altogether with the 70-200 f/4 IS lens. The new batch has a small green sticker on the box (bottom) as well as the TC itself. I got mine at SLR revolution.

I attached mine with a kenko tc... The af when light is dim is horrible... Not able the lock on at all... Not sure about the new batches though... Tats why I sold off mine and gotten a 150 sigma instead... Else I would have kept it cos of HIS

You'll be amazed. The new batch of Kenko DGX TCs will AF with the 100 HIS almost at the same speed as the bare lens under low light. I just verified that (1/30 sec, f/4, ISO 12800) for the millionth time. :bsmilie: You should check it out if you get the chance... Optical quality is pretty amazing too.
