Ok, special update just for you. Bought the new 100L with other stuff so special discounted price not convenient to reveal here but it's a fair bit below $1,350. AF speed of the lens is definitely faster but then again how do you quantitatively measure it's AF speed? Sharpness and colour is also very good, up there with the best Ls.

Same feeling.....Bro, this Sunday on?

If I want to start out on Macro photography, would you guys recommend this or the EF-S 60 f2.8? The hybrid IS seems very useful when pointing down...

No problem.i know price secret.i also no such lobang.how is the af speed compare to 135L?i know the new macro is faster than the non-L.i use macro mostly at f22,25 onwards.any significant diff?am considering using this to replace my old macro.and if fast enough...also my 135L but i still thinking, cause that is f2.

I'm sure you have some other lobang with your preferred shop too. I've not used the 135L before, so can't really comment on the AF speed of the new 100L but it's sufficiently fast since it's still a 2.8 on the 7D with 19 cross type AF points. If you can shoot with your 135L at 2.8 most of the time then the 100L at 2.8 will be fast enough for you. However, if you need that 1 extra stop that the 135L has over the 100L then tough choice. Depending on which cam you use, maybe can compensate with higher ISO if noise is not too much.

thanks flyer. i appreciate it. i am definitely upgrading to this for my work..but now have to wait cause bo stocks...=(

i just read on flickr some review. this lens has 3 modes: Full,Limit and Macro.

at Full ,AF speed is similar or slightly faster than 85L
at limit, it is almost as fast as 135
at macro,it is def faster than the original.......

Interesting read... didn't know that about the 100L. Thanks for sharing. I'm blown away by the shallow DOF at macro ranges even with just f2.8 on a crop body. Can appreciate why you need to shoot at f22 now.

What is full and limit mode?

Check this video out, perhaps it may be of interest to you.

seems to show that AF on 100L is much slower than 135L but ultra silent compared to the latter.
edit: wait. The later part of the video shows the AF moving so fast that I mistaken 2 cycles as 1. I assumed that is in the limit mode.

Yup and just stating the obvious here... Macro range on the lens is 0.3-0.5m

Full: 0.3m to ∞
Limit: 0.5m to ∞

Thanks for pointing out. From the MTF charts, this lens is even sharper than 135L. I am sold on this lens. I want one of these :)

Yup, figured that one out. Thanks anyway.

Please post some sample shots of 100L @ f2.8 and 135 @ f2 and f2.8 if u hv both lenses. Want to see if can use the 100L to replace the 135L as a portrait lens.

I'm pretty certain the 100L can be used in place of the 135L as a portrait lens, the question is only a matter how well in terms of AF speed, suitability of range (subjective), IQ (also subjective) and bokeh (again subjective). My point is, a lot is up to the user. If it suits your use, then it'll be good for you. If not, then maybe less so.

- AF speed seems comparable using limit mode.
- Range can zoom in using Canon brand shoe zoom for head shots
- Bokeh should lose out to 135mm @ f2. Want to see side by side comparison by how much

thanks flyer for your feedback.hmm this thread is poison without much pictures...while i wait for new 100L to come in,let me compare and see if i will prefer the reduce range cause i never use 100 outside work.in terms of bokeh i am sure 135 will win hands down. And 100 is only a little more than 85. The push factor for me i guess will be IS usefulness at f22 and 29.else will save the money for now.i shoot with a macro ring flash at shuttle 1/160-1/200.

Will appreciate any bro/sis that have the new and old macro and can do a comparison.
