f1.8D is an old design, very old design, without a SWM (that is silent wave motor) in the lens body. So it needs the camera to have the "screw drive" AF to autofocus. Cameras with are the D200 upwards and Pro series (D1, D2, D3, and the variants). D40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100, and D3000, 3100, 5000 etc all can't AF with this lens.

f1.8G is a brand new design. First difference is it will AF with all digital Nikons. Some older film Nikon AF cameras will not AF with this lens.

And D lens have an aperture ring for older Nikon and pro series dSLR use. G does not - not usable for older Nikon film bodies, good for all dSLR.

And the associated optical differences and, price of course.

Pls get your info right before you post.
D50, 70, 70s, 80, 90 all HAVE built-in AF motor, so they can autofocus with the AF 50 f/1.8D lens.

D100 also can AF with 50/1.8D. See that little screw drive at the lower left of the lens mount in the picture below?

The Fuji S2pro, S3pro, S5pro can also AF with AF-D lenses.

The only Nikon camera bodies where AF-D lenses CANNOT AF are: D40 D40x D60 D3000 D3100 D5000 D5100.
All other Nikon DSLR bodies CAN AF with AF-D lenses.

Ya, compatible and usable. Just that not all functions are available (metering NA).
