New!!! 50mm f1.8 G lens

? why you think no difference?

Actually from the information I have now, it seems to be a big difference as the optical formula is TOTALLY different. The lens changed from 52mm filter thread to 58mm. They added aspherical element. Looks like a complete overhaul. I will be VERY dissappointed with nikon if they cannot make a better lens after overhauling the optical formula and increasing the size significantly.
It's not a complete overhaul, they just added 1 extra (aspherical) element. The size increase is probably due to the added focusing motor.

Also, if you compare the AF 50/1.4D to the AF-S 50/1.4G, the difference in sharpness is not much. The big difference in sharpness and colour reproduction (between the D and G versions) is with the other primes like the 24, 35 etc. Not the 50mm.

linked from nikon website. it's going to be sharper.
Yes, but something is wrong if you spend the whole time looking at MTF charts. Images from the lens matters more than numbers. Is the marginal increase in sharpness (at least, from the MTF charts, the difference looks minimal) worth the (almost) double price?

Wandering how much will it be in Singapore. Hope they throw in for free with D800.
Is my hope too fat?

Not at all. I hope that Nikon will throw in D800 for free when I buy 5018G. :)

not saying it'll be worth the 'upgrade' price. just saying it'll be sharper.

Yeah definitely will be sharper, but IMO not worth the price. I'd get the 50/1.8D over this.

5018G is a good news for those who owns a body without motor. But I hope it will not replace 5018D.

Nikon doesn't replace lenses. They just stop reproducing them. But for the D version, don't think they will because it's the cheapest and most bought lenses of all primes.

Yup. With the introduction of the 50/1.4G and 85/1.4G, they didn't discontinue their AF-D counterparts. I think it will be the same here. Hopefully.

Jedi don't die, they just fade away...

They cannot discontinue the AF-D cameras, just like how they are still making film cameras.

Some people still need the aperture ring mah.

Out of curiosity, which film body is still in production?

Well, if they introduce new lens and stop producing old lens with similar spec, I treat it as replacing. I forsee they'll stop 5018D within a year or so.

Waiting for this lens to hit the shelves... I'm not a fan of the old AF 50mm f/1.8D... Let see if this lens will change my mind.

Wa liew!!!i just bought the 50mm f1.8 lens lehz..now come out the G version????sian half

5018D is a good lens. It definately worth the money. No need to regret ... unless your body does not have AF motor.

aiyah, just treat it as you saved $100 loh.
Cos the new lens is about the price of 35mm 1.8G DX.

ya... 50mm f1.8 is gd le... mostly using that lens for portraits. haha

Based on the MTF, corner sharpness increase by a lot! Contrast improved a tad in the extreme corner as well.
