New 10.2MP Nikon Cam launching in 20 days, is Canon feeling the pressure?

*yawns..* +1

can't believe TS actually stayed up the nite to type this flame-bait..

The only reason Nikon is coming out with this is becoz Sony just made the 10 megapix CCD sensor available on the Alpha. As Nikon uses CCD sensors from Sony, why not? I am sure their R&D would have gotten the body ready a long time ago when Sony was also doing R&D for the CCD. Besides, the technology in SLR bodies were already wll advanced before digital came aboard. Anyway, that is also the Achilles heel for Nikon. They are dependent on 3rd party for its sensor. You could say that in the old film days, SLR makers dont care about the media (film). But in the digital era, the sensor has become an integral part of the whole system as it affects the performance of the DSLR. :)

Wouldnt it be better if Canon is able to come up with a better "kit" lens at a very affordable rate a better strategy than to come up with a "better" spec body. the 17-55f2.8IS is a over-kill.

Like that can "buy" the loyalty of existing users on cropped body; make the convertion of users from the other sides less painful.

Just something slightly better than the 18-70 from the dark side will do nicely. No need to be too fanciful. Why must Canon definately counter new body release from nikon with a new body?

you want more megapixel? I have the cheap solution.

You could make one huge superlager format or pin hole camera and use a scaner as the sensor. The only catch is you can take still subject only.

It had been done as I have came across this in the web.

So is megapixel still important? I would prefer one with faster fps and super sharp and fast focusing.

just my 2 cent but thanks to TS for the writeup.

Frankly, I read this thread with amusement. It basically showed how some people posted without facts and that the back pedalling is amusing.

Fact: the A100, D200 and D80/D90 sensor are all different. Yes, 10.2MP but the (number of) readouts are different. Can you say that the FX vs non-FX CPUs are the same? The number of readouts alter the speed and flexibility of processing. Search on DPReview for the various comments about the number of readouts.

Fact: Chuck Westfall and Canon had stated that they are giving up on the MP race, instead, focusing on the DR. Also, they admitted that their lenses on FF have image quality issue. Do you think it is smart to release another FF camera when there is no 1st party solution?

Fact: Yes, Canon has better noise in this current generation of cameras, but only at higher ISO settings and even then, the competitors' systems matches the previous generation of Canon cameras which many here still holds. The bragging of high ISO noise to me, looks as if the majority shoots at ISO1600-3200 and that all the previous generation of Canon cameras are now useless and should be thrown away since their noise matches the current competitors systems (which is not as good when compared to the current Canon)system.

Fact: The same fact said by different people will get a different response. Example? See the thread about the Travel Charger and the fact that the power solution is overpriced and outdated vs this thread from post #24 onwards. Both talk about the same thing.

To the thread starter, TYM, you started a flame bait. People, in general, don't like to be told that their favourite brand is slipping behind, be it camera or cars.

If I can keep up, I sure will. I see that as an independent factor to my other aspects of my photography or life. No need to take offence. I love photography and cameras equally much, just as I spent as much time on each aspect of them. I believe if i love/ respect my camera I will strive to get more out of it. If that fuels my passion and interest even more, why not? If it is more accessible, and more people take up photography and develop a passion for this beautiful art/hobby, whats the harm? If not for digital photography and what manufacturers strive to make digital photography so affordable, so exciting and help us get make photography more attainable, I would never have found this beautiful art.

I believe photgraphy is both about the ART and MACHINE itself. I would strive to build on both. New things MAY let you do things better, achieve what you want easier and faster, and get more satisfation at the end of the day. I don't want to question those pro on "why the heck you buy your $16K EOS 1D or Medium-format cameras, why don't you build on your skills instead?" There's a reason somehow i am sure
This is a point that I agree with and am not ashame to admit. I first went into photography because of my interests in taking photos, but when I went into SLR, it was because I was also interested in the technical aspects of it, as well as the hardware that I can play around with. If not I might as well just stick with a compact camera right?

As an analogy, a car is a means of transport for most people, but there are also a lot of people who buys a car and spend a large fortune and time tinkering and modifying their cars. That is their hobby. Who are we to tell them, "please don't waste money and time upgrading or modding your car, just get out there and drive it!" Similar analogies can be found in many other hobbies.

There appears to be some "purists" around that gets irritated when people like to discuss about equipment. For goodness sake, this is the Canon sub-forum. Hello?! Those who'd rather spend their energy out there shooting photos shouldn't waste time in this sub-forum.

Now back to the topic lest I be declared as posting an OT by the numerous self-proclaimed forum police.

Canon is definitely the market leader, and it's interesting to see what they will next pull out of their sleeves. They can release a FF cam at $3k but since no other manufacturer makes FF DSLR, I really doubt they'll do so. It makes more sense for them to release new features a bit at a time, to keep the interests there, and to keep their profits up. But 30D and 1DmkIIn are quite a disappointment, and probably an interim measure. Reminds me of D60.

Canon, please give us something with more substantial new or upgraded features in the new models. Thank you.

The release of new cameras doesn't affect the functions of my 300D :)

... but it makes me feel the BBB when I see better things

Haha, sama-sama here...just that I'm using a 350D and I'm very happy with it. ;)
But then the BBB bug can be crushed easily when I look at my wallet and bank account statements.

My money can be better spent elsewhere, reaping better long-term benefits rather than chasing after the newest technology.

Newer stuff doesn't make the older ones any less useful!

Classic thread guys. Very entertaining. Must admit I enjoy the speculation no matter whether its in favour or not of my set-up but the responses... absolutely superb. And I thought I had a low threshold for patience & understanding !!! :bsmilie:

More please !!!

Now just go out there and shoot. more clicks, less talk!

Aiyah, I think the end of the day, competitition drives down price, and ups the offerings, and everyone benefits! I am not loyal to Nikon or Canon but I look at what meets my needs and my budget. That's all. Remember that alot of the cameras now have reach a state where image capture is very acceptable liao. I have a D70 - the new offering is just another "leap" by one of the strong contenders in the Digital SLR market... May the consumer be the greatest winner! :) :) :)

Ever since the launch of digital cameras, the mega pixel war is ongoing, and will continue to get bigger and bigger. The person whom are under pressure are the consumers; should I upgrade? should I switch camp? etc... ppl will empty their pocket for the latest technology.

Myth: Canon is coming out with a 30Ds Mark IIN, with buffer upgraded, unlimited shots till camera lau-sai, noiseless sensor all the way till ISO6400 and built-in HDR to compete with the newer Nikon camera that's coming out soon. However, still 1.6x crop and 8.3MP. No full-frame.

Thank God its Friday...

What's with all these yawning... cheer up.

with the rate competition is rising and with Sony's entrant into the DSLR mkt will only be good for consumers. The more fragmented mkt is the more producers will have to fight for our attention by spurning out new products and better products at cheaper price.

from my personal experience with canon, a well built 4MP camera is better than a out of whack 6/8MP image that has inaccurate focussing that looks soft.

THE more they fight the better prices are...so let the war go on...better for consumers

This must the understatement of the entire forum ....... 55mm with IS at $2K+

JUst wondering who are the people buying such lenses.

Bleeah :( who cares? 5MP camera enough for most ppl. How big you gonna print? 24x36 inches, all your pics? Let them come out with 20MP cam, there is always gonna be competition from some other mfgr.
