Hi , i'm starting out to use films to shoot .

Would really want to know how to develop my own picture. (Black and white)

Can any experience self-develop people out there help me out ?

I went to ruby today & i ask the uncle there if they could teach me , they say yes but it cost 150 plus for everything , include dark bag, thermometer , chemical , tank.

Would like to know how much for item that is needed to develop own Black and white & what are the items.

I read about ilford b&w films it's wrote develop in 24 degree . what it mean ? how do i get the temperature to 24 degree?

need help .

thanks .

take deep breath...

pls view this thread specially for you:

http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/threads/45612-How-to-develop-your-own-B-amp-W-photos

having said that, there is a monochrome class being held at Safra Mount Faber. If you are interested, please google for the website and join.

Uncle is not wrong on the pricing. This is one time cost, subsequent cost will be chemicals and rolls of film.

Developing film is not a science but a mix of science, art and experience. Two person develop with the same instructions will have
different results. But there will be results. It isn't something where if it is wrong or off in timing or temperature, the whole roll
is gone. So back to your question of 24C, most people use ice pack in containers to cool the tap water to 20C - 24C.
For myself, i agar-agar where temperature of 30C is roughly half the development. Ie. if it says 9mins at 20C, then I develop
at my house tape water which is 30C, then i cut the development to 4.5mins. After the first roll, I decide if I should increase
or decrease the development time for the next roll.

Click on the below link and read, it is very detailed.

You will need some equipment for developing B&W.
1. Developing tank with reels to load films.
2. Thermometer for measuring developer temperature (B&W are mostly around 20 degree)
3. Some equipment to measure liquid volume when mixing water with chemical.
4. Dark Bag / Changing Bag to load your films into the reel unless you got a darkroom.
5. Some bottle to store your used chemical for reuse and large volume mixing (Optional)
6. Basic B&W chemical which will consist of Developer, Stop bath (Optional), Fixer, Wetting Agent (Optional)
7. Scissors to cut the film.
8. Sleeves to store the film.
9. Some timer method range from clock to stopwatch or IPhone application.
10. Some tapes or a device from ruby (Forgotten the name, think it is call film plicker or something like that) to take the leader out in case of winding the whole film into the cansiter.
11. Some clips, can be clothes hanger to hang your films after developing it.

Developing timing and temperature can be found in http://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php, all you need to do is to select your film and developer and click search.

Only chemicals, developing tank and changing bag u need to buy from camera shop.

Other things like thermometer, measuring beaker, funnel, clips, all can buy from ikea or handyfix or 1 dollar shop or daiso for much cheaper. But need to run around abit.

If you buy everything from ruby it cost $150, but if you buy some of the above from ikea can keep it abt $70 only.

If you using kodak trix, then use diafine. No need bother about temperature and the chemical can reuse forever.

No need to attend class lah. I just watch youtube and follow my iphone app called massive dev

What I can suggest you is to get a roll of useless film (You can try asking the ruby if they have some if you are getting the equipment from them). Then practice spooling the film into the reel. Then practice spooling the film into the reel and put the reel into the developing tank in a changing bag. This can rise some confidence and prevent first timer accident in loading films into reel.

I started with patterson plastic reel. Now i prefer hewes steel reel. I find steel reel easiet to load. But opinion on this varies, just letting ot know there exists 2 options. The steel tank is smaller so use less chemical and water

@artspraken, where you find diafine in singapore? Or no choice have to ship?

Quite true for getting equipment from alternate source for saving cash. But regarding films and chemical choice, I personally don't find it a good idea to just get fixed on something. I used Trix and with other chemicals as well including Diafine and didn't find it to my liking. In the end, the best from my POV is old fine grain developer from Kodak (Found from google and printed to archive in my cupboard) on Trix. Still personally, while result is good, I still don't shoot with Trix.

Metol --> 2G
Sodium Sulphite --> 100G
Borax --> 1G
Mix with dilluted water to make 1L

Timing wise is quite the same as D-76 timing. A note that I don't push or pull my films, so I am not sure of result if you attempt to push or pull.

BTW, thanks as I miss out funnel :p

Both adorama and freestyle ship diafine to singapore. I bought mine from adorama.

No shop in singapore sells diafine. (last i checked) Actually not many shops in the world do. Quite obvious because diafine can be reused indefinitely.

Thank wootsk shifu for teaching. Im new to photog so i find diafine a good start. Ppl new to film got so many thing to learn. Still got scanning and post processing lei. So hor, i intro diafine at least make the developing easier mah. Can dun need to play with temperature. Next time i will explore other things wan, just not now

Haha its nice to try some of each and see which one that best suits your workflow and liking, just went to safra website and saw this;
SAFRA Photographic Club has replaced all the enlargers in their new and bigger darkroom. SAFRA Photographic Club members can also look forward to the new digital darkroom with high-end computers and scanners for photo enhancement.

No more darkroom? kinda sad, wanna try enlaging but their prices are like O.o

Ill rather save up the money for more film more developing chemicals and more equipment haha!

Gonna try bulk rolling soon, still looking for info tho

Wootsk you bulk roll right? I rmbed you said can get frm ruby right? What basic things i need uh? the roller, darkbag and canisters right?

1+9 means the dilution ratio

1 part chemical, add 9 part water.

So if u mix 1 litre, you use 100ml chemical and add 900ml water and stir

Depending on how many rolls you are developing. Its written on the developing tank. Usually a plastic tank needs around 400ml for 1 roll and 700ml for 2 rolls.

Different developer got different ratio?

Would lile to know which developer and fixer you guys use for ilford hp5+ films. 400 iso

And what is stop bath? I download massive dev already. I choose the film and developer right ? So i just follow the ml and everything ?

please go national library, borrow a couple of books on basic B&W darkroom, such books nobody is reading now, you can find them easily, after reading them, if you still don't understand, than post some questions here.

please don't expect everyone post darkroom 101 here..

How many ml you need? Depends on size of developing tank you use. 500ml if you are using the standard Patterson one that can put 2 rolls in at once. For 500ml, just use the standard mineral water bottle.

Different developer got different ratio? Yes

What is stop bath? Stop bath is just one of the chemicals. It is used to stop the development process, before you put the fixer. Just follow the iphone app.
