I have used the Nikon D300s extensively and currently use the D7000. Both are very adequate, and if I had to get one now, I would consider getting 2nd hand, since both dSLR are going at a steal in the 2nd hand market.
I currently favor the D7000 - other than the lower build quality and only 39 AF-points vs. 51 AF-points of the D300s, the D7000 is able to match most of the D300s capabilities.
