The French 75mm Field Gun (aka French 75)

The French 75 mm field gun is a quick-firing field artillery. Its official French designation was: Matériel de 75mm Mle 1897 or commonly known as the "French 75" or simply the "75", designed as an anti-personnel weapon system for delivering large volumes of time-fused shrapnel shells on enemy troops advancing in the open.

The French 75 fired two main types of shells, both with high muzzle velocities (535 m/s for the shrapnel shell ) and a maximum range of 8,500 meters.

- A 5.3-kilogram (12 lb) impact-detonated, thin-walled steel, high-explosive (HE) shell with a time-delay fuze.
- A 7.24-kilogram (16.0 lb) time-fuzed shrapnel shell containing 290 lead balls.


The gun had its drawbacks – it fired in a flat trajectory i.e. lacked the higher trajectory necessary for indirect fire, especially in rougher terrain to reach into trenches or dugouts. Its shells were also too light to penetrate fortifications or deep shelters. (Heavy guns and howitzers were later developed for those purposes.) But against troops in the open fields this gun was deadly.

At the opening of World War I, in 1914, the French Army had about 4,000 of this field guns in service. By the end of the war about 12,000 had been produced.










Despite obsolescence brought on by new developments in artillery design, large numbers of this field gun were still in use in 1939 (4,500 in the French army alone) in the early stages of World War II.

WS090 Opel BLITZ Truck (King and Country WS090)

The Opel Blitz Type 3.6S (S - Standard) was a 4 x 2 truck that was used by Germany during World War II. The transmission of the vehicle was a 5 speed forward, 1 speed reverse type.









Opel Blitz (German for "lightning") original logo for this truck, two stripes arranged loosely like a lightning symbol in the form of a horizontally stretched letter "Z", still appears in the current Opel logo.

The Opel Blitz design was a conventional system - fitting six wheels (the rear axle wheels doubled as pairs), a forward-set engine compartment with the driver's cab directly aft and a rear-set cargo/passenger area.


From 1937 to 1944 approximately 140,000 of these trucks were manufactured in 127 sub-variants. By simply changing the body these trucks became cargo and troops transports, fire engines, fuel tenders, ambulances and more.

The Opel Blitz series maintained a stout presence throughout the war for wartime Germany. The vehicle was a fixture wherever the military needed to operate - be it in North Africa, the Western Front or the Eastern Front. extensively used across all Fronts.
