My PowerShot S5 IS

Actually sold off my S5IS to one of our members here, but I still have my brother's S5 to play with.

Now, he's asking me if he should go for a 52mm (if it's available here) or a 58mm adaptor with a good wide angle lens and a tele.

Now I know you guys are the experts around here, so maybe you can help me (him) out.

I've been looking around a liitle bit myself and found the brand "lensmate", but nobody here in SG seems to be carrying this around.

Another thing he needs is a clear filter for the lens adapter (to prevent dust/ scratches to the lens) when he's not using any lens attachment - so are there any recommendations? Or should he just use a clip-on lens cap for the lens adapter?

Will appreciate it if you could recommend the shops to get these accessories too.

Thanks all in advanced.

I use a Lensmate 58mm adapter, have a 58mm UV filter (to protect the lens) on it. Lensmate is online only, you can look at their website here.

For WC or TC, its normally best to get a separate adapter for them. Then you can just use the bayonet mount to remove the adapters, instead of screwing/unscrewing the converters onto the adapters. Much faster this way.

Hi all S5 users,

Bestsellers for Canon S Series are the DCR-6600PRO and DCR-1540PRO w/metal lens hood. For macros, it's still the DCR-250 and CM-2000A. Limited stock.

I have the 6600, 1540 & 250. Quite happy with them.

Hey Jim, do I get a discount every time I promote Raynox? :bsmilie:

Hi mohdya,

This 52mm Raynox adapter is as good as the one from lensmate and can be purchased immediately in Singapore:
http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250109225273

We also provide clear uv filters for all the adapters at extra cost.

PM me if you keen.

Cheers,
Jim, McGill.

Thanks. So with the canon WC-DC58A, you could zoom to maximum tele and still could obtain sharp image, i.e. correct focus could be acheived through out the entire range of zoom level (12X), right?
The reason I asked is that I have a cheap WA lense, which I could not acheive correct focus when I zoom in to a certain level.
Thanks.
P.S. How much did you pay for the lense? Do you know where to get it cheapest?

Sharp image at maximum zoom, not so. Cos the image quality will depreciate just a tad bit and will not be noticeable unless u crop it.

The originals are built for the cam so definitely it will optimise its usability. 3rd party ones usually do not optimise image quality and full usability.

I got it for $180. Cheapest place?? Not sure. I got it from Bally Photo Funan. U may want to ask from MS Color or TK Foto.

Dear Jim,

He is not the only Raynox promoter leh. I am also one. I also have the DCR6600PRO 52mm which I got through Mophis (James).

So, me got discount too or not for the next item I get from you. By the way am looking at the 58mm version of the DCR6600PRO as I changed to a Fuji S6500fd. Got one for me to try? Website promoting the 0.79x version on Raynox site.

Cheers...

2 more question, regarding tele convertor this time. I took the photo below with the S5IS at full zoom (12X). Can't go nearer as the bird will probably be frightened off. Which tele conversion lense is best if I want a bigger image of the bird? (I have a 52mm adaptor)
Another question is that with TC lense attached, will it enable us to take macro shots with some distance away from the subject, say 1m - 2m ?
[Sorry to have so many question as I'm really a newbie on conversion lense thingy 8^) ]

Hi felixcat,

Many thanks for your queries!

It's always good to have more promoters around.

Yes, we happen to have 58mm thread DCR-6600PRO. This one can be mounted to some 62mm digicam or DSLR lenses too.

The 0.79x DCR-7900ZD is very good but at a higher price tag of $370nett. Still cheaper compared to what you buy in USA (@US$249). Stock to arrive soon.

PM or SMS me if you keen to try.

Cheers,
Jim, McGill.

Hi Raymondb,

You can consider the DCR-1540PRO from Raynox, as below. It gives you more than 18x optical zoom, probably the limit for handheld photography.
http://raynox.co.jp/comparison/digital/comp_pss2is.htm#dcr-1540pro

OR

DCR-2020PRO if you have a tripod. Check out the pics below to see if the lens meets your requirements:
http://raynox.co.jp/english/digital/S2is/index.htm

As for taking macro shots using teleconverters, I'll let you know soon. ;p

Cheers,
Jim, McGill.

So far 100% satisfaction from all our S Series users.

Thanks.

I've not tried the TC cos i don't intend to get one as i'm more of a wide-angle shooter. Go try it to see it. The originals yield best results cos i do not trust 3rd party ones.

can we put lens cap in front of the WC-DC58A?

if you mean the one that came with the cam, you can't cos the diameter of the convertor is much larger than the cap..

isst worth it to upgrade from s3 to s5?

isst worth it to upgrade from s3 to s5?

I am a Canon S3 IS user and my opinion is not worth upgrading. If you ich for new camera, upsize to dSLR or option a tiny compact for all time shot. I read (some thread) that intervalshot feature is not in S5, sad to know that too if true.

got another question..
does the wide/tele convertor have a filter thread in front, or you have to screw in filters first before attaching the convertor?

Most Raynox lenses have front threads.
DCR 1540- 67mm
DCR 6600- 72mm

Some third party ones do not have front threads.

I was a S3 user, now S5. I would say "no" to your question, unless you are dying to get a larger LCD or hotshoe. By the way, intervalometer is gone. Continuous shooting mode is also down to only 1.5 fps.
