Fully agreed. The purpose of these companies must be to serve commuters. If they can do this and break even by the end of the year then it is perfect. Any other surplus should be put aside for future expenses.

And the only answer is to nationalize these companies and do a total revamp.
Why need to have 2 MRT companies with 2 sets of administrators and highly paid CEOs, and doing the same job. Any need of competition to attract customers? The commuters are captive clients with little alternate options. Same with the bus companies.

Who skimped on maintenance for close to a decade and caused all these problems?
Who came with only skills to run retail, then realized when his/her her skills are lacking, decided to compensate for his/her inadequacies by transforming SMRT into retail?
Who decided in 2003 to freeze wages, so SMRT workers almost went on strike? If this happened, then the unbroken streak since 1987 would end in his/her hands. Really is historical achievement unlocked.
Who decided to give out dividend after fat dividend, until when Desmond Kwek took over and put things in order, dividends had to drop by half? Isn't this indication the business has become unsustainable?

And when people are being squashed on the platform because of a train breakdown, who got the fat reward and walked away with a lavish lifestyle he/she felt entitled to?

And finally, who put this person in charge?

Still, the root cause of the problem was the poor maintenance of the trains/tracks, which is what caused the breakdowns in the first place. If there are no breakdowns, the train station wouldn't be so packed until the escalators get blocked by commuters waiting on the platform.

Doesn't change the fact that the station crew were idiots. What? They need to be told to use their brains? Thankfully this was an above ground station. If it wasn't, there'd be people fainting and such.

I am still wondering what qualification the General has. He has a master of arts in science ? Where can I buy such a degree also ?

Anyway, any engineer with half a brain can tell you, when you run a system beyond its design load for a long term, it is not good for the physical infrastructure.

A private sector solution is to liberalize route monopolies. A lot of people don't know that buses are forbidden to run the same routes parallel to MRT tracks, because the profit of MRT operators "must be protected".

This way, the overloading on MRT lines is reduced, and efficiency is increased. If you want to see positive changes in how Singapore transport is run, sack the Transport minister and have me lead. I'll do it for catnip. Meow.
