i shot this many years ago

Sometimes back, I tempted to shoot the moon using my 70-200 handheld. At ISO1600, the moon appeared to be orangish-red, whereas ISO3200 it appeared dull.

I thought the 70-200 would be better than that, did you have any auto settings still on when you shot those?

The half moon shot is very popular among astrophotographer as the transition banding between light and darkness brings out the crater details.

Shot through a 480mm f/6 telescope lens, ISO80, 1/100s.

This setup is not suitable for camera lens.

Tip: Use a polariser for moon shots. It will cut away the reflected sunlight and enhance details.

Use manual focus and live view

For camera, crop sensor with focal length 300mm and above is good enough, although 300mm will only fill up about 30% of the picture.

Else get a telescope, u will see a whole new world =)

I will try using a polariser on my next moon shot. I've never considered that before. Your moon shot is one of the best I've seen... makes me wanna get a telescope now... BBB!

Haha. Thanks. Unfortunately it was not shot with a DSLR, instead a Canon PowerShot A720IS

Telescope are more difficult to maintain than camera lens. It also has more handling and technique discipline.

Telescope have 'short tube' or 'spotting scope', which are from f/4 to f/6, fastest in its class. Lightweight, great for birding as well.

Focal length from 400mm to 600mm. Cost about $800 to $2000 without accessories. Beginner for moon observation.

The mid range focal length 800mm to 1200mm, f/6 to f/8, about $1200 to $2500

All manual focus only.

The thing about telescope is u will need an telescope mount, motorised ones to track the moon and stars for tack sharp images.

Excited...... ok.. im gonna share my result for my attempt with a 18mm-200mm f/3.5 lens...

i tested a few settings and i realize sometimes the moon becomes dull( like black and white) and some has yellowish... though i dont really know the reason..

The moon surface has no uniform colour, especially with blotches of patch on the surface, therefore it can screw up the white balance.

My moon colour can vary from white to brown, including green and blue ...

Change to black and white and it will look better.

i'll try with CPL and a few more methods ba.. though i really wanna get a 500mm lens for the moon... but.. i try out with 200mm first ba...

As Rule sunny 16 for full moon and 8 for new moon

at f/16 Speed = 1/iso

if change f, change speed/iso

A custom WB setting of 4000K works well for me.

I took this using a D-Lux 4 (macro mode + 2.5X Zoom) & a cheapo Galileoscope.

Full moon is usually hard to photograph and not much details will appear in my experience.

Will attempt to shoot again with a DSLR set up when time permits.
