it's a matter of how badly you want the colour to be perfect...and how perfect you want it to be...
for most of us, just taking a chance on a printer printing a reasonably good image for us is usually good enough...if not happy with the print, just ask the printer to adjust it by abit here, abit there and that is good enough...and of course getting the monitor colour right is also a good thing to have...
what I described is for the very picky, who want colour to be perfect...I used to work for someone who was like that...but that is commercial photography...abit extreme...in fact, that is not all and for colour critical images, I have to go down to the printer's and supervise the print and sometimes kick the printers a$@ to get the colours done right...;p
