Hi everyone. Im currently using a Sony A300. Im kind of confused with the different metering modes. Currently the default setting is "Multi-Segment". There are also "Center-Weighted" & "Spot".

Can someone enlighten me on the differences? I have heard that if I want to take portraits i should use Center-Weighted and if I take macro, i should use Spot.

Kinda confused:dunno:

Thanks lots..

Wow. Thanks for the info. Really helped alot. (: So in essence the metering mode depends on the current situations?

depends on what you wan to do, you have to understand how each metering mode works, and use them when you need to, and also read up about exposure compensation too. :)

OBone - my advice to you, and i have repeated this many times to the other CSers is that you need to know what is the end-result you want to achieve. There is no right or wrong metering to choose. Besides metering, there are other variables that can affect your end-result. Bearing that in mind, your camera is like a car which helps you to get to your destination.

I see. Thanks. Will keep that in mind. :)

Every camera manual will have at least a short write-up about the metering modes and certain camera-specific details. It's this little booklet that came inside the box. Sometimes also on CD.
