Memories of Hokkaido

Hi Tommy

Haha one evening of poisoning.
Thanks for sharing with me ur vast experience as well!
Will look forward to wat u will be coming up with for ur portraits and wedding shots man

Ryan

Yup . To really replicate the effect u probably need more than just that. I have seen some posted overseas that looked really like the real thing that on close scrutiny i cannot tell as well

Ryan

I have done some myself. This is my first pic too with the lens blur effect.

Here is the real thing. Remember to buy packets of buscuits to feed them.
Each of them learnt some antics to catch ur attention to feed them. Some will wave to you, some will pray to you, some will keep pointing to their mouth ..

Each little packet will cost you 200 Yen and smells good too :bsmilie:

I've been going to Hokkaido every December for the last 4 years and had never seen anything like what you've shot. Since you are also a Nikon user(from your photoblog), can you please...please tell me (if you don't mind)what I should do (listed in simple point form for camera settings, lenses etc) to get some not so bad photos this December?
sincere appreciation, esther :D

Hi Estherfu

Welcome to CS. I am already full of envy that you got a chance to visit there so often.
Might ask u for itinerary tips since I am making another trip down in winter.

I must confess I am an amateur myself that picked up photography earlier last yr. There are many more pros in this forum with eons more of experience.

Here is a list of what I carried. I do not have most of the settings at hand ( the resized flickr removes the settings ) but in general

My landscapes / panoramas are taken at around f8 - 11
My tilted shots for selective focus are done at biggest aperture
Most of the shots done by my 70-200mm are done at f2.8 unless I needed more details from the background
Most of the panoramas are taken on a tripod

I do not have too much tips on making better shots except to see more of what people do and have some idea and try out new ideas. For example this trip i had the goals of playing with my PC lenses, taking panoramas, and taking uber long exposures for landscapes ( the later I got no time to do in the end ) Try them locally so that there will be less things to surprise you. Gotta be so familiar with the setup such that when you are there you just need to compose and shoot. Of course if your travel companions are accomodative of your shooting, having time for yourself to compose and think is a big plus point.

I also read up on the places we are going ( since i planned the itinerary ). Usually on reaching the place I will try to ask around where I can have a good view of sunrise / sunset. As you travel around the area, look out for nice places that might give you good shots later. I visited Otaru and joined the local festives at the port, and struck me that if i get a sunrise between it might give me a nice shot.

Sometimes waking at odd hours gets you the light your shots need
A prelude to my Osaka series. woke up at 330 am to scout around the places.
Shot was only taken some 2 hours later when light trickled in :

Lastly being overly critical of yourself helps. I put alot of shots up in this series for the purpose of sharing my trip details and what we went through. If it was more to showcase nice shots, I probably would not put more than 10% of what is currently here.

PMed you some stuffs, hope u find them useful.

That last pic is jaw-droppingly beautiful!

I'll be in Hokkaido in 3 weeks... I will try my best to emulate you! Realistically I won't be able to but I'm inspired!

No worries tyho no matter what you will bring back great memories.
I could not captured every bit of how I enjoyed the trip, but the beautiful memories stayed with us in our hearts was more than enough to last a lifetime.

If it is a family trip remember most importantly to enjoy the holiday with your loved ones !
( If you are one of those lucky ones to have a photog trip different story :bsmilie: )

Thanks.....
The Osaka sunrise (or sunset?) was awesome.
If you've turned photo-mania only less than 2 years, did you purchase all the lenses etc within this period? Is it not quite a lot of $ to spend unless you are thinking of turning pro, or is it justifiable for as a hobby? (not sure I should ask this Q, may get bashed by all the maniacs!!)
Couldn't understand half the things in your list but I'll find out....
December in Hokkaido: Snow+++. MY short annual family ski holiday at Niseko. What is the recipe for photographing in the Winter snow?
Thanks again.
Esther;)

I haven got a chance to take pictures of snow with my setup leh. Probably not to blow the highlights of the snow I guess ? ( I will find out for my nxt Hokkaido trip )

Ya i put abit too much into the hobby last yr, no doubt abit gear headed initially and the BBB caught up with me, and I was almost working every weekend for the first two months for fund raising ( Justifiable is ... subjective ) But slowing down the buying tempo nowadays :)
The process of thinking, composing and capturing, down to processing ( and printing ) is actually very satisfying.

With proper post processing you can probably take alot of similar shots including panoramas like what I did with a kit lens

We saw this bear in some old bear farm posters around Noboribetsu.
And we got to see this fella again in the bear farm. We think he must be really old.

Anyhow this fella is really good at catching biscuits that people throw.
I think from the years of experience. He was *basking* under shade and refused to bulge
from his prime spot.

* For a while we thought he resembled some really fat dog
