Memories of Hokkaido

Furano 富良野, the geographically central of Hokkaido, is another must visit for tourists, famed for their vast lavendar farms in summer and their light powdery snow and blooming ski centres in winter. There is also the JR Furano Lavendar Express communicating Sapporo and Furano from June to end August during the summer period, taking passengers to places like the popular Farm Tomita at the summer only JR Lavendar station.

* Note that the time table for the summer JR Furano Lavendar Express varies every year - You can check the rail time table online , but you have to get the Furano timetable separately from the JR helpdesks.

We checked in Furano at Hotel Natulux, the nearest hotel to the JR Furano. It is a rather small but new hotel, well designed, minimalistic western style with latest electronic automation you can think of ( I was impressed by their level of automation in their toilets but in general the toilets are much more hi tech than our ones here ). Free fast internet in rooms, remember to get the LAN cable from the counter. Oh by the way spacious rooms by Japanese standards, and a see through bathroom :bsmilie:

( In winter out of convenience you might choose to stay in the ski resort hotels near the ski sites, which are further from the Furano station )

This was part of our lunch at NATURAL DINING in Natulux, a small restaurant within.
It was taken in natural daylight ( one of the sides of the hotel was a see through transparent glass ) , with use of my glass and utensils to block and give abit of direction.

for snow you need to read up on exposure compensation... rem to share your itinerary? I am going there next year :D

I don't have the luxury to take long holidays, usu 7-8 days. (My first 14days holiday trip was 2 years ago, after more 20 years of working life) I book through Prime travel. They are starting chartered flights (2 return this Dec) direct to Chitose/Hokkiado. Otherwise you'll transit either Tokyo or Osaka. We take bus direct from airport to the ski resort. We've been to Niseko, Furano and this year we'll also visit Resutsu.

Hm .... Can you tell me where is the best source to read about exposure compensation?

Thanks.

Awesome stuffs, Ryan. You never fail to amaze us with your imagination. I love your pics. In comparison to yours, mine sux big time. :bheart:

Ryan, I sympathise with Genie's heart breaking feelings... but mine's more like :o and:bigeyes:. Is it too much to ask if you could share a few hints/clues/secret formulae/tutorial notes when you post your photos(like each one, for the absolute Newbies). I think you can start a Fan club judging from the response.

Hi Esther

In a landscape with predominantly snow, the camera's metering might be fooled with averaging it and shoot it greyish instead. You might compensate by adding one or two stops more to make it brighter. The tool that you can fall back on a DSLR would be the histogram. There are many good articles online will illustrate this point.

Fan club ? :bsmilie: gotta be joking. Will try to answer any questions posted / pmed

A woman and her daughter trying to catch an incoming train ( The Lavendar express train )
from JR Furano station. It was an interestingly decorated train, no air con just good old windows and designs in the various cabinets.

* Remember to check out the schedule. There arn that many too and fro on that day we went visiting Farm Tomita

Thx Copikau.
The D80 is a pretty light weight competent camera, does not break my neck for a long trip.
I got alot of talk about godzilla as well. Maybe I shld try to PS one in one of these days. :bsmilie:

Taken at a slightly different time frame with the sun giving abit more directional lighting, an old man reading some prints on a bridge that lets passengers cross the platforms ( no lifts / escalators ... heavy luggage beware ).

Abit too slow with my fingers and composition ( and an unwieldy looking 24mm PC ) , took a picture of the friendly Furano train master posing with tourists. Should have shifted the shot a little more to the right.

A shot taken from the window on the train, with a slightly higher shutter speed
( Train was not moving too fast really, and shooting at f2.8 tilted, I did not need
to push the ISO high )

The suburbs are pretty sight in Hokkaido.
Colorful painted houses, and large well delineated fields. Plenty of flowers around Furano area as well.

Selective focus on the houses.

A guy busy filming the entire stretch of the train. He actually paced to and fro, sometimes recording from the windows, as if making a documentary. How do you like his dress code :bsmilie: Can you see the sunflowers hung over the ceiling in the cabin behind ?

Like many other trains, you got a reserved carriage as well. ( Unlike the free reservation in other JR lines, I think this reservation gotta pay extra )
