UNITED DEFENDERS TO MISS IPSWICH CUP TIE

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed Marcos Rojo and Paddy McNair suffered injuries against Southampton and will miss Wednesday's Capital One Cup clash with Ipswich Town.

Rojo is unavailable due to a hamstring problem, while McNair, who replaced the Argentinian for the final 20 minutes of Sunday's win at St Mary's, is ruled out of the third-round tie at Old Trafford with a "minor" issue.

On a more positive note, the midweek meeting with the Championship side could bring Phil Jones's first appearance of the season. The defender, who has been sidelined with mild thrombosis, is back in the squad and will be on the substitutes' bench – though van Gaal admits the centre-back is not 100 per cent fit.

The boss told MUTV: "Rojo has a hamstring injury and Paddy McNair has a minor injury. I have to admit that because of the injury of three defenders [including Luke Shaw], I shall have Jones on the bench but he is not fit."

Meanwhile, young duo James Wilson and Jesse Lingard won’t be required to face Ipswich after they both scored in 90-minute displays for the Under-21s against Evertonon Monday.

The manager added: "I don’t need them so they can have a day off and then Thursday they will be fresh and can train."

Hosting Ipswich Town at 3am ... A win no less!

MANCHESTER UNITED 3 IPSWICH 0
Goals: Rooney 23, Pereira 60, Martial 92

More here

Wayne Rooney has scored in the League Cup for the first time since netting in the 2010 final against Aston Villa. long long overdue!

Martial took only 220 mins to equal Falcao records from last season. ;p

Pereira’s superb free-kick on the hour-mark though as the youngster netted his first senior goal in sublime fashion, curling home from 25 yards in front of the Stretford End. What a debut for the youngster!

Next round Middlesbrough ...

PEREIRA WILL PROVIDE GREAT COMPETITION

Louis van Gaal feels Andreas Pereira will compete for a number of roles within Manchester United’s team after the Brazil Under-23 international capped a first competitive start with a stunning free-kick against Ipswich Town on Wednesday evening.

Starting on the left flank in the Capital One Cup third-round clash at Old Trafford, the youngster was eager to impress and proved a lively presence throughout the 3-0 win. Most notably of course, he curled in that unstoppable setpiece to render Ipswich goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski powerless and put the Reds 2-0 up on the hour mark.

Such a performance from the 19-year-old prompted the boss to suggest that Pereira, along with Jesse Lingard, is a youngster who can challenge for attacking spots in the Reds’ line-up.

Van Gaal said: "It was his first line-up match (start) and I think he did rather well. He scored a fantastic, important goal and I’m pleased but he has to compete, for example, with Juan Mata, Memphis Depay and Ashley Young so it shall be difficult for him.

"He can play in the no.7, 10 and 11 positions. Lingard can also play no.7, 10 and 11. I have multi-functional players but they have to compete with other players. It is dependable on the level of the players. I always put the best player in the line-up when he is working for the team."

Pereira
