Night scene comparison with Fuji F31:

LX3 ISO 800

The F31 looks better at 800.

Wow!

@ ISO 800 F31 sure is a lot better.

This really shows that adding pixels isn't the way to go for any P&S. 6MP is plenty enough for 4R prints.... any bigger prints and the noise would reduce the perceived resolution anyway.

BTW guys what is the battery life for your LX3?

For me under normal usage I find the original battery can go to about 350 shots while the 2rd party only about 150 shots.

Half-a-day usage if I'm conservative.

I still miss my DSLR batt life... shoot until happy still no prob.

For LX3, really have to think first even before turning on the cam... like back to the good 'old days of critical composition in head.

But sometimes very pek-chek, from thinking to composition to AF and capture... takes almost 3 secs on avg... lost quite a few candid shots already. To aggravate the situation, shot-to-shot time is about 1 sec apart.

d7t3,

Those are excellent shots. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison at ISO 400, if you get a chance.

Thanks!

I was thinking of getting this cam too but lack of viewfinder n 1 hotshoe only for speedlite flash or viewfinder makes me "pek chek" also. Prefer to use speedlite flash for hotshoe..but a big flash on a small cam and still got to compose thru LCD...kinda weird to me..:dunno:
Wonder hw will canon's SX1 IS w cmos sensor w turn out?

ISO 400 .... F31 slight advantage.

Further update for Nikon WC-E68 on the LX3.
First the converter fits the adaptor tube perfectly.
The size and the balance is just nice unlike the WC-E75 which is heavier and bigger.
It is wider than the E75 but may have more distortion at the corners also there is no vignet.
Just some snapshots with the converter to get a feel of it.
All images with the Nikon WC-E68, looks like this is the converter to use.

Can see the distortion from the 2 beams on the left and right~~~

Yeh but I am not expecting distortion free for a converter lens at such wide angles. In normal landscape and others it should be OK but for architecture even my 14-24 on a D700 also maybe not perfect.

Sorry guys, I'd love to, but I've sold BOTH the cameras :-( to save up for a new DSLR (trying to minimise my spending). Don't have enough $ to keep even 1 compact.

If you see my earlier comparison, at ISO 400 even the ixus 850IS is better than the LX3's default output! Canon have been working on their compact image quality too.

But my opinion is that I'd prefer the LX3's output (noisy but detailed - impt) to Panasonic's past processing (everything obliterated). What you get is an unmatched 24mm f/2.0 with OIS. The output you just have to deal with in post-proc. (And down the sharpness for jpegs.)

Fuji has a distinctive fuzziness (opposed to the LX3's looks-like-USM patterns) which I don't like. The F31 is only clean at base ISO (100). The mantra for whichever camera would be, "use as low an ISO as you can". Thankfully, OIS should help in this!

Nitpicking aside, I must emphasise that all 3 cameras mentioned here are perfectly usable at ISO 400 IMO. And if I had to go to 800 to get the shot, I wouldn't hesitate.

In reply to the viewfinder posts, I also wish that the LX3 had some kind of VF, even though the ixus 850's is really tiny and disgusting. The LX3 VF is overpriced - I'd look at a Voigtlander alternative (still not cheap) or even make my own out of wire! Agak-agak oso can lar...

As for the Nikon adapters, thanks Dennis for the samples. Seems like your new one has quite visible CA?

Yes the E68 has more CA than E75 especially the edge (actually can say is bad) but I am happy with the wider view, more compact and handles well, most of the time corners are not so important, the E75 does have a slight hint of vignet as well. Overall I prefer the E68 to the E75.
Also due to the wider view I can zoom slightly and still get as wide a view as the E75 with slightly less CA and distortion.
Not sure how the original is ?.
Will try to do a test on the 2 converters vs 14-24 on D700 if time permits. (OK I know it is not a fair thing but just for fun) ;). Would be good if the original is available and also if I can get a 46-43 step down ring I might be able to test the converter for the GX100 as well.

share my 2 cents about LX-3

try to use RAW always, shut down noise control (can make imaga more sharper and color more real than usual).

anyway, panasonic leica is not leica at all. if you want to try leica on DSLR, better go for leica R series lens directly, they can be used on oly or canon DSLR directly, and even better than current so-called "digital" lens.:bheart:

Actually what is the difference between Panasonic and Leica? Im actually quite confused as they look exactly the same except for logos. Are the lens very different? As Panasonic claims to be using Leica lens.

what is the difference,,,yes, pana said they use leica designed lens (made by pana, not leica). best way is try leica R on canon FF DSLR...you will find the answer...I just sold my LX-3.

Been running through the forum, and don't really see people commenting on this, so just want to let any interested bros know, my 430ex runs TTL on the cam.

Tried bounced flash and the results are really nice :D

Does that mean I can try my 550EX on it too? ;p;p

550 ex is really MUCH bigger than 430 though, ha. It's too much of a top heavy bottom light situation I guess.

Nonetheless, if it works, it's good :D

Anyone tried using the levelling function?

I tried using it and the problem is the picture is never saved successfully. I level the picture and then it ask "save as new picture?" I click yes, it seems to be saving and the end result still the same unlevelled picture.

Anybody here can explain the use of the intelligent exposure. Don't think the manual explains its use. Do you turn it off, set it to low , high or standard?

thanks

tried it before, the photo will be saved under a new file.
