Long lenses for F1

please no F1 discussion here please.kopitiam got one thread on it.

i prefer to shoot from hotel room and i would like a scene of the ferrari with the city skyline as backdrop.
if i were to shoot just the car panning, it's no difference from the tons of pics you see here in the link posted by luval.

i think swissotel the stamford has rooms with balcony, so of course i wont shoot from the room with the window on.also, that's not a good way to feeeeeel the F1 roar.

i'm thinking of the usage of the lens after after the F1.what am i going to do with it?go birding with the nature guys here?:dunno:

i got a hunch 300 f 2.8 will be more 'suitable' for my needs in future.
at least, i can still do portraiture with it?:dunno:

but guys, 300f2.8 with TC2x, confirm pic wont be as sharp as 600mm f4 right?

Jeanie, that would be a good idea... Would like to have a beautiful birder to shoot when there is no birds ard.. Ok joke aside, why dont you just rent one for the event? it would solve yr problem of what to do with the lens after F1.

Generally I think a 300mm f2.8 would be better. its not easy to focus on the super fast car with a super tele. You will go like... alamak, where is the car. (we sometime have that problem when shooting birds). You would also need to learn the 2 eyes technic, one through the viewfinder and the other (most ppl close their left eye) to find the subject.

apparently not so.i read the ST yesterday and the guy who's in charge of the lightings design said we should bring sunglasses:bsmilie: to the event.because the lights they will use is going to be very very very bright, and it's almost like day time.

Not exactly day... but more like a Stadium setting.

1600 lux.
Daytime would be more like 32000 lux.

I believe you can check with those sport shooters (football enthusiast may be able to help here)

Originally, the race was planned at day. The route was around town as mentioned in the papers.

Each round, the cars would have to pass thru' 4-5 ERP gantry, extensive tests had been conducted by the authority and it was concluded that the current technology don't allow the gantry to successfully capture and deduct the cash card in the high speed F1 cars.

To be fair to other motorists, the people in charge reluctantly convert it into a night race to avoid the ERP problem. ;)

All F1 races are held in day time, typically 2pm local time. The F1 cars don't have headlight at all.

time to ressurect this thread.

question:
is a super sturdy tripod necessary for lenses like 300 2.8 or 600 4?

will monopod be able to support the weight of these lenses?

First of all, IF, you get to shoot F1 under the press accreditation. NO tripods are allowed, only mono, as they are deemed a hazard. Big monopods like those carbon Gitzos are more than enough to support your 600MMs, more so than tripods.

Back to the original question, 600 or 300 w TC? Both are good, it doesn't matter cuz unless you want to shoot portraits of Alonso or Kimi in the paddock with aperture fully open, then you will want a 600 f4. Cuz like you said the 300 will be f5.6. But if cars on the circuit, both have their applications, cuz you don't shoot them wide open, but anywhere between f8 to f16 to capture more details. Specially on fast panning shots, 1/60 or 1/125 @ f11 are common.

A lot of the guys like to the 300 w TC combo at races where space is limited, like Monaco for their smaller size which allows photographers to work in more confined space.

thanks all.
not shooting for press for sure.
i want to sip my champagne/red wine in a cool hotel room that overlooks the track.

i'll prob prefocus and couldnt do panning shots.i reckon panning shots are way too common.
actualy, f1 car shots are already very common dont you guys think?whether it's shot in sepang, monaco, singapore, i guess you will only know it if you include the background.
so, my intention to shoot f1 is very much different.it definitely wont be panning.

i hope nikon's rumours of releasing new lenses is true.
anyway, we'll have till next year sept to wait.

i would definitely love to own a 600mm, but i am seriously thinking what to do with it after f1 season?
:dunno:
not really into birding too.:embrass:

i may have asked this b4 but had forgotten.

does the 600mm lens come with a hardcase or soft case for carrying or do i need to get one separately?
if it does, then will the size of it be comparable to that of a trumpet like those hard case musicians carry?

Not into birding? Can try mooning :bsmilie: (sorry, couldn't resist)

Sell lor... best time to buy a 2nd hand 600mm will be after F1. Then a newbie will start asking what is wrong with the 600mm how come so many ppl selling :bsmilie:

If you really intend to get a hotel room. Just stick with drinking wine and relaxing and watching the race. Really. Even if you have a 1200mm from up there, the angle and all just doesn't make a good motorsports action shot.

Motorsports shooters sweat and put their a**es in the line of danger in order to deliver those fantastic shots. I don't think you can cut corners and expect to deliver the same.

hmm...good point.but i like to challenge myself.
i guess it depends on the kind of angle you want.
for those motorsports shooters like you mentioned, their shots will prob be from side, from front.

for hotel room, if i can prefocus to a point, i can actually capture the top view of the F1 car.
wouldnt that be somthing different as oppose to those panning shots you always see?
those...are really kind of boring.:embrass:

120-300/2.8 with a TC then after F1 you can always shoot sports with it.

You don't know jeanie :nono: ONLY Nikkor for her. :p

Top-down view? Yeah... different. But heh. Since you said you don't like birding blah blah blah. Paying that amoutn for a 600/4 only to shoot race day once a season seems a little extravagant bah. You could rent...

or like I suggested some time back (is it in this thread?) get a 300/2.8 at least you can do some other things with it.

yup.in terms of practicality, i reckon 300 2.8 suits me better.

really wished they come up with 300-600f2.8 orf4.
possible?

The sigmonster 300-800 f5.6 is close to that. Got one selling in CS for $6800. His copy is sharp. But you need someone to help you carry the lens.

Then you will complain that it is so damn big.

The 300/2.8 is just about right I feel. The 200-400 f/4 is already so huge. And you want a even longer zoom range and wider aperture?! :bsmilie:

Possible... Sigma introduced a 200-500/2.8 at this year's PMA heh. Go dpreview, it has a article on it.

looks really cool.
but i wonder how's the IQ like.

you abandon NIKON.... or you get Sigma to print Nikon on it?

and start weight training, it weighs only 5.9kg

one thing about nikon, their super long lenses are mostly fixed focal lengths.
save for the 200-400 which i think aint long enough?:dunno:

5.9 aint that bad lah.
