American businessmen Tom Hicks and George Gillett are reportedly willing to sell their respective stakes in the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise and Montreal Canadiens National Hockey League (NHL) side to complete a US$500 million refinancing of English soccer club Liverpool.
My family and I want very much to stay involved with the club but we understand that we have to be open to solutions that may include partners who own a controlling interest in the Rangers, said the 63-year-old Hicks in a statement. Thats not our preference, but there are some potential buyers who wont consider having only a minority interest.
English press reports over the weekend claimed that the pair are ready to reaffirm their commitment to the club, and could even provide an increased transfer budget in an effort to overhaul Liverpools great rivals, Manchester United. United equalled Liverpools record 18 English league titles in May. 11 of those wins have come since Liverpool last secured a championship win, nearly 20 years ago.
Liverpools finances are on something of a high, with the club expected to announce record turnover and increased profits of US$60 million this week. Whether the refinancing will free up the funds needed to begin work on the clubs new stadium remains to be seen.
