Atletico hit by stadium ban

Atletico Madrid have been hit with a stadium ban for their next two home Champions League fixtures as UEFA handed out their heaviest punishment so far for racism.

Due to the trouble that flared during last month's European match against Marseille the Spanish club, who were also fined €150,000, will have to play their group games against Liverpool and PSV Eindhoven at a venue at least 300 kilometres outside of Madrid.

Atletico coach Javier Aguirre has also been banned for his club's home and away fixtures against Liverpool on October 22 and November 4 for insulting Marseille players.

NOW MILAN WANT AGGER

First we had Real Madrid apparently sniffing around, now it looks like another European big boy wants to whip Daniel Agger away from Liverpool.

The Daily Mirror reports that AC Milan are chasing the Dane like dogs in heat, presumably wanting to bring the average age of their defence down to around 55.

Interestingly, the paper reckons Meeeelan are prepared to offer Yoann Gourcuff, the latest hot young Frenchie to be labelled the new Zidane and currently doing great things on loan at Bordeaux, as part of the deal.

skirtie injured liao mah, so he will get a chance to play la.

we still got sami hyppia.

XABI QUIET ON BARCA RUMOURS

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has refused to speculate on rumours claiming he's being lined up as a potential replacement for Yaya Toure at Barcelona.

Alonso was strongly linked with a transfer to Juventus over the summer, but a move to Serie A failed to materialise.

Reports emanating from Spain have suggested the 26-year-old could be a target of Barca with Ivory Coast international Toure unhappy with his inconsistent role at Camp Nou.

It is suggested Barca could swoop for Alonso if Toure, who has been linked with Arsenal and Juve in the past, demands a move in the January transfer window.

Alonso, who signed at Anfield from Real Sociedad in 2004, told the Spanish media: "I am content at Liverpool and I have still not decided on a concrete date for my return to Primera Liga."

RAFA URGES UEFA RETHINK

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has blasted the late switch in venue for his side's Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid, claiming it is unfair on the club's fans.

The Reds were due to face Atletico at their Vicente Calderon stadium next Wednesday, but the Spanish club have been ordered to play at least 300 kilometres away from the capital as a result of crowd trouble during the match with Marseille on October 1.

Atletico have until midday on Friday to appeal against their punishment, which also included a 150,000 euros fine after Marseille's players were racially abused during the Group D clash.

UEFA have expressed sympathy for the Liverpool supporters caught up in the turmoil, but communications director William Gaillard yesterday insisted there was "no alternative" to the stadium ban.

Benitez, however, is adamant the ruling from European football's governing body has come too late.

"We know about the loyalty of our fans and we know about the incredible lengths they go to to support us," the Spaniard told www.liverpoolfc.tv.

"They have an incredible passion for the club, which means they follow us all over Europe at great expense to themselves, and we always appreciate that.

"That is why we are so worried by this ruling. We can understand why UEFA feel they have to act - but in this case maybe this time it has come too late.

"To change the venue of the game at such a late stage would cause massive problems to our fans, and that is not fair."

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, meanwhile, has spoken of his disappointment after hearing his much-anticipated return to play a match at Atletico Madrid may be scuppered.

"After so much time waiting, it is the worst and most unexpected news that I could have heard," said the 24-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Atletico last year.

"I'm eager to go back. I don't know if it is definitive; I hope that a solution can be found.

"It is a shame that these incidents have forced the stadium to be closed, but if this is what happens then we have to accept it."

Atletico's former Liverpool forward Luis Garcia has branded the punishment "excessive".

"There will be complications after a punishment like this, I'm sure," he told clubatleticodemadrid.com.

"The club and the fans will have a lot of trouble seeing the game against Liverpool if the punishment is confirmed. We have to accept it, but I think it's something that should be looked at carefully."

Torres Injury

Torres limps off for Spain after muscle tweak

Spain striker Fernando Torres lasted less than 16 minutes of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Belgium before being replaced by Cesc Fabregas.

Spanish media are reporting it was precautionary as the Liverpool striker had felt a tweak in the muscle in the back of his left leg.

Liverpool will be hoping it is not serious problem as they face Wigan and Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League next week, as well as a Champions League trip to Torres' former club Atletico Madrid.

Torres started the match well enough, firing in a 35-yard shot inside the opening two minutes that Belgium goalkeeper Stijn Stijnen needed to push away, but he was replaced not long after with the European Champions trailing 1-0 in Brussels.

Spain team doctor Oscar Celada said on Spanish television: "He has intense pain in the back part of the thigh. It is difficult to diagnose now exactly the extent, if it is a question of a strain or a small tear.

"If it is a strain then he could be out for about a week.''
