Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez will be cursing international football once again after learning that both Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel limped off while on World Cup qualifying duty.

Fernando Torres suffered a similar injury when he limped off against Aston Villa earlier this season.
Torres lasted less than 16 minutes of Spain's World Cup qualifier against Belgium having felt a tweak in the muscle in the back of his left leg and was taken off as a precaution. Liverpool's top scorer now looks likely to miss out the Reds' trip to Wigan at the very least with his chances of appearing against old club Atletico Madrid in the Champions League also appearing remote.

Benitez will be especially keen to have Torres, who recently missed out on the last international break after tearing a hamstring muscle at Aston Villa back in September, for the following Sunday against Chelsea.

Spain team doctor Oscar Celada told Spanish television: "He has intense pain in the back part of the thigh. It is difficult to diagnose now exactly the extent, if it is a question of a strain or a small tear. If it is a strain then he could be out for about a week."

Babel was also forced off in Holland's 1-0 victory in Norway.

The 21-year-old was substituted after 26 minutes with the nature of his injury yet to be disclosed.

Meanwhile, Liverpool staff and fans alike await news on where the match with Atletico will be played. The Spanish club have been imposed with a 300km ban after crowd trouble and racist abuse marred their clash with Olympique Marseille, causing an outcry on those who had already paid for flights and hotels.

An alternative venue has yet to be decided with Atletico saying on Wednesday that they were confident they could at least get the ban postponed until a later group game with PSV. A UEFA decision is keenly awaited.

The Anfield boss has indicated his record signing will be out of action for 10 days with a hamstring strain - ruling him out of games against Wigan, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.

Benitez said: "I am very disappointed about this because it now looks like we will lose Fernando for three very important games.

"We have Wigan at home and Chelsea away in the league and Atletico Madrid away in the Champions League, so to lose any players is a big blow.

"The initial reports say Fernando is likely to be out for around 10 days and that would mean he would miss these games.

"There are too many international games and the demands on the players are too much. Someone needs to analyse this situation because it is putting the players at risk of injury.

"Maybe the answer is for there to be a two-tier qualifying system because there are too many games in the qualifiers for the World Cup and the European Championships which are not competitive but which still place great demands on the players.

"These fixtures are unnecessary and maybe it would be better if the weaker countries played one another and the best of them went to play the stronger countries in the qualifiers."

Benitez's mood was further darkened by Ryan Babel's injury in Holland's qualifier against Norway.

The winger suffered an ankle injury following a heavy tackle by Blackburn's Morten Gamst Pedersen, though he has yet to be examined by club doctors.

Scans have revealed Fernando Torres will be out of action for between 10 and 15 days, while Ryan Babel is a major doubt for this weekend's clash with Wigan.
Doctors at Melwood discovered a tear in Torres' right hamstring which could rule him out for the next four games - Wigan (h), Atletico (a), Chelsea (a) and Portsmouth (h).

The injury was sustained after 17 minutes of Spain's World Cup qualifier in Belgium on Wednesday night.

Babel, meanwhile, should be back sooner after spraining his left ankle during Holland's match against Norway.

Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton said: "A scan on Fernando Torres has shown a tear in his right hamstring which will sideline the player for between 10 and 15 days.

"Ryan Babel has sprained his left ankle and is a major doubt for Wigan on Saturday."
