Life on the streets

EATING OUT

Dine alone, order that extra dish, have a feast and don't forget to pair it with a special drink. The lure of the coffee shop. Eating out makes perfect sense.

IT IS WELL

It has no engine, neither a gear box and not even a steering wheel. But it gets me from point to point. I can still see my world this way. Proud of my ride. I may not be in the ideal situation of my life, but I'm making the most out of it.

DADDY'S ARMS

In daddy's arms, I'm tall. It's the safest place there in the whole wide world.

BIG AMBITION

Apparently, there're more than one Amazon in the world. There's the humongous rainforest that spreads into 9 different countries. Then there's Amazon.com that sells everything online including the kitchen sink. I'm so thrilled to find one here in Singapore selling cameras and electronics. It's a small outfit but the name suggests big ambitions. I could almost hear the vendor's thought: "Some day, this shop's gonna expand..."

CATWALK

The street can be many things. It can be workplaces to some or a part of a journey en route somewhere to others. To me, it's an important piece of Singapore, a portion of our culture and life. To this little girl, it's her catwalk. Good to be here.

WIND ON MY SKIN $image-2990439716.jpg
I don't know about you but learning to ride a bicycle was an ordeal for me. I fell many times and landed in places where no bicycles had gone before, the most memorable being in a muddy canal. The excavation of the bicycle wasn't as bad as facing the horde of curious passerby who laughed at my expense. Still, I wouldn't exchange that feel of wind on my skin when I'm up and going on two wheels. I feel free and empowered. The ability to go places outside the reach of my walking was a big deal to me. Learning to ride was a necessary episode in my life.

She may deliver newspapers as a job but the fact is, she's the bearer of important news. The outlook of what you do differentiates making a livelihood or making a life.

I GOT YOUR BACK
$image-2310465908.jpg
The haversack is a great invention. An amazing assistant, really. It helps to carry those important miscellaneous, distributes weight marvellously across the shoulders and back and enables the wearer to travel the distance with the load. Nevertheless, it pales in comparison to a human assistant. At the end of the day, who will really cover my back except another soul?

GRITTY IN GREEN

Portrait of a street vendor in Little India. This little lady ran a long stretch of vegetable stall in one of the alleys. Her expression showed toughness. She must be, considering the amount of vegetables she had to handle day in and out. Respect.

SPREAD THE LOAD

Friends are like trolleys, burdensome to be around sometimes but when needed, will help ease your load.

AGE OF INNOCENCE

Something I learned as a parent. There's a time where your child will believe everything you say and love you unconditionally. However, that time won't last forever. Cherish that time.

REINVENTING

Newspaper vendor having a slow day at work. I can identify with her. Let's face it, no matter how amazing our jobs can be, we do hit this point. Feeling bored with work can be as dreadful as getting retrenched. I tackle this by simply hanging in there and finding new ways to do things. Reinventing is a spice of life.

VENUS SHINES

They say it's a man's world but the ladies can handle some stuff we can't. For one, we can't wear dresses but they can put on pants.

CURIOSITY KILLS THE SLEEP
$image-3551099578.jpg
It's tiring when you're curious all the time. That may be why cats sleep 16 to 20 hours a day. I'm no cat so I'm fighting this feeling. Wait, what's that?

WHAT'S IN A NAME?
$image-1280293146.jpg
There are different reasons why we may be drawn to a photo. It may be the subject matter, in this case, a man looking away to evoke a sense of curiosity, or the contrast of his white shirt to his skin colour and the background. It may be the location and the harmony of supporting details. It may as well be the lighting condition at that given time. So what's my take when I took this picture? It's the name "Leslie". Now say my name.

WHAT DEFINES YOU
$image-3721551549.jpg
At the end of the day, know what's valuable and what defines you. It shouldn't be an LV bag.

GOTCHA
$image-3390580800.jpg
It was hard catching up with these guys. They were all over the place, never staying put in one spot long enough for anyone to interfere, let alone a stranger to take a photo of them. Then they decided to sit a while, which allowed me to walk over and do what I needed to. There's much to learn about life through waiting, anticipating and seizing the moments. There will be misses, but I hope those seized will count.

HELLO FROM THE OTHER SIDE

Let me not lament this gift I've spent that's called Youth. Rather, let me embrace this work of art with grace that's called Age.

BE RIGHT BACK
$image-758444898.jpg
I took a break from the streets for nearly 4 weeks. Good to be back. It was a day at the National Gallery. Appreciation, inspiration and aspiration are all there. The works on display made me feel inadequate and small. Yet I acknowledged the part I can play through my works. Albeit a small part.

Great photos. Thanks you for sharing
