Life on the streets

THAT SIBLING THING

They push, they shove and they may even get rough. But if someone gets in the way of either you'll see just how quickly they'll unite. Sibling rivalry is just hard to explain.

LOOK UP $image-728615330.jpg I'm part of a generation where a considerable amount of time is spent looking at a screen. I embrace it, this thing called the digital age. I've learned so much about life and our world this way. But ever so often, when I do take my face off the screen, the lessons I observed in real life proved so much more valuable. Remember to look up - I'm here, I'm present and I'm involved in the people and things important to me.

CALL HOME

I can't remember the last time I used a public telephone. This scene struck a strong nostalgic nerve in me. It was an era replaced by the mobile phone. Still, certain fundamental remains. Call home.

AMBUSH

Ambush is s good technique to use in Street Photography. From a distance to the right I spotted this cyclist heading this way. Figuring the building's entrance to be a good frame, I did a quick focus there and waited. Clicked.

The look of hope over a few pieces of lottery tickets.

"If you clean your room, grandpa will give you $5."
"Grandpa, how about you forget about the idea and I'll give you $10."

Children are great observers but poor interpreters. Lead them by good examples. Teach them well.

GETTING PERSONAL

I don't text. I call.

CLEANING UP THE MESS

My tribute to those who clean up where we left off after each meal at the coffee shop. Please do me a favour: next time when you encounter a cleaner who clears up a table so that you can have a good meal, do put on your sincerest smile and say "thank you".

Very important man this bro ^....

SLEEP TO LIVE
$image-2578978729.jpg
It's a fact we need sleep more than food. Our bodies can go on for a few weeks without meals but if we don't slumber for ten days straight, there's a high chance of us kicking the bucket. Sleep, and live.

There's wealth on them papers of each book. Speaking of papers, what about exam papers?

On sale here are the ten-year series examination papers of different subjects from various "top schools" spanning the last ten years. Education is a serious business in our land. To elaborate the point, though the exams were just past, a sign says 2015 papers are opened for preorder.

This tells alot abt the earlier life hurdles of many generations of young singaporeans from 80's onwards.
Good work!

THE BOND OF SISTERS
$image-1744930898.jpg
In the movie "In Her Shoes", this poem was recited towards the end by Maggie to her sister Rose. It's a beautiful poem by E. E. Cummings:
I carry your heart with me,
I carry it in my heart.
I am never without it,
anywhere I go, you go, my dear.
and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling.
I fear not fate,
for you are my fate, my sweet.
I want no world,
for beautiful, you are my world, my true.
Here is the deepest secret nobody knows,
Here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud,
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life,
which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide,
and this is the wonder that keeps the stars apart,
I carry your heart,
I carry it in my heart.

BALANCING ACT
$image-1889574864.jpg
I'm fascinated with bikes. That's why I love to take photos of people riding them. I'm mechanically illiterate but I appreciate the amazing forms on two wheels, surprisingly more than cars. Don't be surprised to hear me say I love to watch Bikers' Build Off TV series. Bikes are such beautiful balancing acts.

Pick your greens, they are an important part of a healthy life. Likewise for friends. Choose them wisely, for not all friends who laugh with you will cry with you.

THE JOURNEY
$image-3366112715.jpg
The journey is the reward. Am reminded now during my students' graduation show - don't focus so much on the destination that we miss out on the route there. There're so much along the way that we'll miss when we reach the end point. Let's celebrate the journey at the destination.

THE CURVE IN THE STRAIGHTS
$image-4074324741.jpg
There is no straight line in a human anatomy. This is contrasted against a scene made up almost entirely of straight lines. The wonders of man and his creations.

NEIGHBOURHOOD
$image-275835417.jpg
Those familiar stretches that you take ever so often when you step out of your house make up your neighbourhood. If you pay attention, you can hear them say that you are very much a part of them. If you love your home, you gotta love your neighbourhood.

EVERYTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK
$image-2150475706.jpg
As famous as Singapore's coffee shops in our heartlands are the provision shops. These are shops that sell household necessities that range from toilet brushes to light bulbs to metal pots and pans. Children usually don't stand a chance not to be pulled by their mothers to the provision shop to help carry home household items purchased. Are we done yet?
