Life on the streets

KEEP MOVING

A main characteristic of the street anywhere in the world would be movement. People are constantly moving. There are things to be done and places to go to. Movement is life.

BEAT STREET
$image-2638695177.jpg
Street vending is a way of life to many Thais. A great number of these vendors fight poverty and supplement their income this way. I learned that many of them hold day jobs and continued their livelihood in the evening by vending in night markets on the streets. These are amazing people who form a social, economic and cultural force that shape the urban landscape of Bangkok.

GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES

A light moment in the night market. It's always the people who make or break a place. In this case, happiness came in a little bundle, and it's not for sale.

SOME LIKE IT SMALL

Shades. Bigger better? Or smaller wearable?

SOUR CURE

What to do when life hands you lemons? You sell pomegranates.

I HOPE YOU DANCE
$image-3347208355.jpg
I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
GOD forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance...

NOW SMELL THIS
$image-3663379338.jpg
I must admit it was intimidating as a foreigner to witness the vast array of food types offered on the streets of Bangkok. The different aromas leave a deep impression in me. I'll definitely remember Bangkok by its smells.

MONOCHROME
$image-1934443765.jpg
Night photography at Siam Square One. The beauty of monochrome is that it isn't affected by temperature of any man-made lights. No white balance necessary. I love how lights express themselves in tones.

VENDORAMA
$image-714911133.jpg
The majority of the people I photographed on the streets are vendors. They are synonymous with the streets because their livelihood are carved there. I'm intrigued by them. The spaces and stalls they run form great backgrounds for environmental portraits, which provided me the incentive to photograph them.

BEST IS YET TO BE
$image-859525100.jpg
Age is catching up with me. Father Time visits quite often now, like after every basketball game, bringing his gift of aches. That could be why I like taking photos of elderly people. They provide me a glimpse of my future. I draw strength from them who are still active, such as this gentle lady, who is still doing it, vending on the street. I aspire to be still walking around with a camera in hand when the time comes.

CONTENTMENT

Girl looking at new caps but then decided to stick to her hat. Be happy with what you have.

FOGOTTEN SOMETHING?
$image-3181223.jpg
Have you been in that place where you've made your purchase and then feel like there's something you've missed?

NAUGHTY AT CHRISTMAS
$image-90437581.jpg
Naughty girl looking under Ms Polar Bear's skirt. Guess she didn't receive any presents from Santa last Christmas.

ARTFULLY YOURS
$image-2809114747.jpg
I thoroughly enjoyed going round the art section in Chatuchak. Inspiration was bountiful and I felt alive. Though my profession centres on design, art is an intricate part of the work flow. When it comes to Street Photography, it's very much an art form to me, as I'm doing it without any commercial affiliation. This way, I can keep it pure. It's my expression of life and how I witness life, all in black and white.

MR CLEAN
$image-1632106808.jpg
The clean specialist. He's got a broom for every occasion. No corner of the house is beyond reach. Coming to your neighbourhood soon. Cash on delivery. How cool is that?

FACES NEAR, NOT FAR
$image-2127086518.jpg
Faces. So many of them of people famous but we don't know. May we not miss the faces we do know and are around, faces of people close and dear. Particularly that face we see in the mirror everyday.

EXTENDING YOUR MILEAGE
$image-1480395456.jpg
Cobblers on the street. Extending the shelf life of our favourite shoes. Keep moving.

OVERTIME
$image-2709327075.jpg
The night is always young in Bangkok, more so during weekends. Many streets take on second shift in the dusk as night markets emerge, giving tourists the excuse to stay out much longer. Sellers and buyers in overtime.

ENFORCING A GOOD NAME
$image-1391455096.jpg
Law enforcers mingling with locals and breaking smiles. The childhood I came from referred to policemen as cold authoritarians who would "catch me" if I didn't behave. This photo is a tribute to all my uncles and aunts who tarnished the good name of a police officer.

GETTING OUT OF COMFORT ZONE
$image-1455007682.jpg
Saw this girl who's definitely oversized for the pram she was resting in. Reminder to self: gotta get out of that comfort zone when time comes. Continue to grow.
