Welcome but dun get too entrenched wif the Bokeh thingy. There are alot more fun things to focus in for Photography. Haf fun...
That's exactly it. You want to blur the background. It's called subject isolation via depth of field.

Then you need to read up the basic..especially on depth of field and aperture values.
no such thing as bokeh shot..wrong use of the word "bokeh" here.

MHO is that you will want to get either the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC or 50mm f1.4 DG. It's better to spend more for either one. On a crop sensor, this will be the two most useful focal lengths for full body and upper body shots respectively, based on the common shooting distances you will find at most events here in Singapore. But, if I had to pick one lens out of the many, it would be the 70-200 for me, based on my camera and personal framing preference.

use a 135/2 or 85/1.4 sure give you lots of "bokeh"

Canon has the 50mm f/1.2L and 85mm f/1.2L. If that isn't good enough for you, there's the 200 f/2. Haha. Take your pick.
On a budget? Then you cannot ask for too much, can you? 50mm f/1.8 is a common answer, although I don't think much of that lens.

No wonder I didn't start of as a Canon user! I can't afford it! Haha!
Now we also have cosplay lenses, nice addition to the wedding lenses, children birthday lenses, child birth lenses, street lenses, landscape lenses, bokeh lenses and not forgetting the XMM lenses.. It's time to rewrite the stickies.
TS: Do yourself a favour and read about the basics of Depth of Field (e.g. here: Understanding Depth of Field in Photography) and which factors contribute here. Subject isolation is a fundamental technique and does not require special lenses. Instead of looking for the magic lens you should work within your budget and use basic skills. Your wallet will be very grateful for that.

If it's ground shoots that you are after, I recommend that you consider getting a flash first before a lens. No matter how wide your aperture is, if there isn't enough light, there isn't enough light... You may want to post some images to illustrate what kind of image you want to achieve thou...
*btw despite earlier saying that 50mm may be too tight, I manage to take 1 shot using it, (a combination of 50mm f1.8 + flash)*
You need a good 3-4m away from the cosplayer to get this shot.
I agree with you.. 50mm on 1.5crop is tight but totally possible. It was what I had to work with anyway.
did a lot of full body shots with this lens. Really need lots of empty space..
