i have nv bought or owned any camera in my life and my first camera was a D50...

with S/A/P mode on a d40/d50/d60/d70/d80/d200/d300 anyone can use a dslr like a pro-consumer.
just turn the dial can already.
don't need to own any cams one why waste time, just do the shortcut way, isn't that the thinking of some ppl...sorry too much OT already.

But taking pictures is more than just turning the dials. Different situations require different settings, which in D80-level camera are preset (though maybe not perfect).
For example, if I want to take a potrait picture, I turn the D80 dial to potrait, whereas in D200, I probably want to dial A and set aperture to a low number so that I can get that shallow DOF. Another example is taking sports pictures. D80 would set it to favor faster speed and center focusing, whereas you have to do this manually in D200. Now, does a beginner have the know how to use what settings in these different situations?

For those who are looking for D200 brand new, I discovered today at AP , they said that Nikon has dropped the price of the famous D200.

New price package - D200 + 18-55mm VR lens at only $1550 with GST man!!

price without the lens is less $150 / $200 i think.

That makes the brand new price of a new D200 body going for only $$1350...

woah...this is a big indication that the 2 'newer' models that Nikon plans to launch FF bodies are definitely happening this year...

( ** I do not work at AP, just a regular customer, that's all )

cheers guys!

they having their pre IT show for bargain hunters?. haha. :P

I have to disagree.
The keyword is "beginner".
I think the D200 maybe a bit too advanced for beginner and has higher learning curve than the D80.
Yes, there are more functionalities at a similar price point.
However, the D80 has more user-friendly features than the D200.
Of course, the weight differs quite considerably between the two.

Just my 2 cents.

AGREED! Newbie here, already finding it hard to cope with so MANY functions and understanding the relationships btw all the various factors... wher got time to learn the additional functions of the D200 !! :o:confused:

beginners can learn, it's not that difficult. and if they want to take good fotos, have to learn at least the basic, 'A' definitly gives more controls than 'potrait'. maybe for a new buyer they don't need some features, but how about several months later when they learned, i'll suggest buy the best u can afford
for myself d200 vs d80, i don't care faster fps, stronger metal body etc. but now i do care metering for mf lens, which i ever thought i will never touch and now i found it's good and dam cheap:dunno:

I agree. My first DSLR is D50, but from the first day I got it, I have never used those modes like 'portrait' or 'auto'. I have always been using 'A' or 'M' instead. and this enabled me to learn those basics much faster...

d200 of course, $100 for mf lens metering, quite a lot cheap & good ai/ais lens are supported, like 35/1.4, 24/2, 105/2.5, 180/2.8....and for rich guys, 28/1.4, 58/1.2, zeiss zf....

Just spend $25 to convert your pre-AI lens, you can basically use almost all Nikon lenses

my colleague called AP SL yesterday. instead of $1550, he was quoted $1700 for the kit by the salesperson. dont know why the difference.

so is there really a actual price drop at AP since some say "NO" some "1550" and some "1700":dunno:

call AP SL & look for alan, the salesguy. say you are mand's friend from CS. he quoted me $1550 with gst.

cheers!;)

I just hope the promotion is still available when I'm back in SG

Where to do $25 pre-Ai conversion?

Just search for "repairman" in Services Offered/Wanted section

if alan the salesguy from AP at SL is pulling a fast one on me...........that guarantees me to stop patronising them. however, i spoke to him personally on the phone yesterday & he confirmed that the price is $1550 with the 18-55mm VR lens & GST inclusive already. go and call lah...instead of i think this, i think that.............;)

Actually after giving it a second thought, I think AP might be pulling a fast one with TS. If they are really selling D200 at the stated price, I cant imagine how much are they are going to sell the D80, and where to position D80?
