I have to disagree.
The keyword is "beginner".
I think the D200 maybe a bit too advanced for beginner and has higher learning curve than the D80.
Yes, there are more functionalities at a similar price point.
However, the D80 has more user-friendly features than the D200.
Of course, the weight differs quite considerably between the two.

Just my 2 cents.

nah, thats not true. if you are serious about taking pictures, the d200 will get you much further faster. simply because its a much faster cam built with better hardware. there's the better AF sensors and the faster AF motor. all in all i would go d200 anyday.

D200 have at least 10 more features better than D80 on papers, to buy or not depends more on whether you need them.

i'm a d80 user with 2 ai lens....last year this time when i bought my d80, was very sure i will not touch any mf lens:dunno:

what kind of beginner are you guys talking about though? It's tough to think like a beginner when you already at this stage, i.e. serious amateur and pro. Imagine someone going from PnS to D200. Or are we talking about beginner moving from D40?

d80 is my second camera and first dslr, until now less than 7k shutters, first camera is a conpact dc (canon a710), bought a few month before d80, guess i should be consider as a beginner :think:

actually beginner is more easier to be affected by bbb virus :sweat:

i think is more like ppl who used FM2 or pro-consumer before upgrade straight to d200, skipping the d80 along the way.
don't be surprised, there are bound to be some like that.
anyone with enough money can just buy a d300 and turn to A/S/P mode to use it like any pro-consumer.

Actually after giving it a second thought, I think AP might be pulling a fast one with TS. If they are really selling D200 at the stated price, I cant imagine how much are they are going to sell the D80, and where to position D80?

I agree. Ken Rockwell has a comparison of the D80 and D200 on his website. You might want to take a look.

Nikon dropped price on the D200 so any nikon reseller should be able to match the deal.
