K5 Stock

All the black ones sold here in SG (or elsewhere) are part of the K-r/DA35 kit, that's why no retail box but a brown box. I myself got the same one, and all the other black DA35 lenses owners have the same brown boxed version too. You are not alone :)

I'd rather spend 80 less to have the same lens w/o a retail box, especially if I want a black one over the gold or silver one ;)

agree with u  no need for the colourful box... its definitely not worth $80.

i was just like some of you guys here when i had my eye set on the da35..while i feel that during the first time the price went up to 299 it was perfectly reasonable to me and i agree with vollov that if the price went till about 300/320 it was still feasible..i was ready to buy the lens and sold off some of my spares to get it... thn poof 360!! i ended up dropping the idea and will probably top up and get a tamron 17-50 instead for a walkabout instead of trying a new prime haha

True, I did get the lens anyway, but would have been nice to know beforehand that I was paying for the kit lens packaging and not the normal retail box version.

I guess it really depends on how you look at it. So far, for both the dal1855, dal50200, dal55300, nobody is selling these kit lenses directly as a retail set so why this break from the norm by MJ? To be honest, if the guy passing the lens over at the booth wasnt the guy from MJ but was from Bally, Song bros, etc, meaning a retailer, I would have walked away.

I hope u guys understand what I mean...

Actually they did told me there is no box when I ask them abt the 288 offer .

And for the point of "for both the dal1855, dal50200, dal55300, nobody is selling these kit lenses directly as a retail " there is such a case actually . But not from emjay lah .

well, they didn't tell me. if they did, i guess it would be better. for me, it was really that i didnt know. anyway, I bought it either ways. :)

the DAL kit lenses are not meant to be sold out of the kit, so if there are retailers doing it...well, I'm not running the business.

either ways, like I said, it was from MJ, so i could still accept it. But otherwise...a bit hard unless I know upfront it is legit and it is meant to be so.

in any case, the da35 is a good lens...sharp wide open and the color and saturation is perfect...for 288, it's good...up to about 320. :D

Yeah . Actually I am someone who prefer box kind of person as I like to keep all my lens/cam boxes too . But with a discount price of 288 , I guess I can't complaint and had to go with it :)

Actually I think some sale person also unaware of it . As one guy almost give me a Box DA 35mm then another guy stop him and say 288 offer is from the Kr set one . lol

haha..a lens is a lens..as long as we are happy with the pics it produce..i would luv to get the new DA35 if not for the fact that I already have the FA 35 :)

didnt know there is a niche market for pentax lens boxes. i am a lens-cum-box person too but i am willing to let go of some of my lenses' boxes for a small fee. Make me an offer that i cannot refuse.... :bsmilie:

anyone interested in lens pouch? I have the FA50 and FA31.

i am just joking.

:bsmilie: u dunno meh? ebay got a thriving market for boxes and instruction manuals... i suspect some traders buy them to package their 2nd hand lenses to enhance the resale value...

no joke leh... can label from "used" to "mint" or "NOS". significant mark-up ;) unscrupulous or dishonest? i won't judge... just an observation that such things happens and buyers must be discerning

try selling as bnib/new for a lens that comes without a box or in a brown box and see the difference with one that does...

Think about it for a minute. If you think the difference in price is because of the color or finish of the box, then nope, you are wrong. The cost difference between a brown box and a retail box is no more than a few cents on the dollar...but is sold in a brown box purely to prevent people from selling a discounted lens as a retail lens at retail prices...

So, let's try buying a FA* lens brand new from a shop that somehow comes in a brown box and tell me that doesn't raise questions in your mind...

I know you guys are "joking" but you know what, let's not take things too lightly because the price is reasonable. detritus mentioned the word "discerning", and that's what we need to be,

The 288 prices is for the da35 kit lens parted out from the kit and sold cheaper because of that. Fantastic. And great that MJ and Bally is willing to do this...and I bought one because you can't argue with the price. But also try to look at it from their point of view as this wasn't done purely for our benefit as some of you appear to think. The Kr kit with DA35 probably ranks behind the Kr kit with 18-55 and body-only options in terms of demand during Sitex. So if these were not parted out and sold in this manner, they probably wouldn't have been able to sell these kits anyway. The crowds at the Pentax/Bally stand weren't even close to the crowds at the Sony, Canon, Nikon booths...

Whether correctly or not, it doesn't matter. If the price is fine, so be it. As long as MJ recognizes this sale under Bally as a legit sale, I'm fine with it.

Heck, if the k5 body is sold brand new directly from MJ without any box at all for 1300 SGD, i would buy it. but not from anyone or any other retailer without MJ's involvement.

U got a point there. Totally agreed.

even if there is receipt from retailer?

even if...coz the question would then be how the retailer has the set without a box in the first place... :D

i don't see a problem if the camera works, my warranty is valid, and i get significant cost savings.

In another word you are willing to settle for stolen goods or those with doubtful origin, as long as it works and cost significantly cheaper?

are you aware that grey products can be considered to have "doubtful origin"?

also, please do not mix the issues up, the doubtful origin point is a judgement passed without sufficient information OR understanding.

just like how the 35mm being sold is packaged differently... it is not a given that different packaging = doubtful origin, stolen goods. that is merely an assumption on people's part.

if emjay is willing to vouch for it in some way by providing valid warranty, i don't see any issue as to how doubtful the origin can be. from the consumer's point of view, it's $300-$400 off for packaging. naturally, from a cost-benefit analysis point of view, it's worth it.

Well, I went down to the booth on sat and asked them the price of the da35 and was told they still had "some" left at 288. First thought was "Mai tu Liao", told the bloke that I was talking to that I wanted one. Paid for it and went to the collection booth to the served by the MJ guy (I think. He has a Malaysian accent). Gave the receipt and pointed to the stack of da35 there and said I was picking that up. His response was "no, that's not the 288 ones. Those are the 370 gold and silver ones.". He then gave me a brown box and said the 288 ones were these. I was like...WTF...aren't these the kit lens boxes?! I mean...the boxes can't even be closed shut and had to use tape to seal shut.

I kinda had this feeling of being sold a fast one...can they actually sell kit lens like that? So asked if they had warranty, etc...and the guy took an MJ sticker and asked me where I wanted to stick it, on the box or the serial number doc inside.

I took the lens...288 after all...but it left a sour taste in the mouth. :(

Like FW said, I am the 2nd last one to get my pre-order DA 35mm and I was also a little surprised by the packaging. But Ronald did explain to me during collection when it's boxed the way it is (tied with rubberband). I hope you get your explanation from the Bally crew. And that little bit of service (explanation from Ronald) helped. So I can understand why you felt that way.

That said, after the first shots with the lens (on the spot), I know I have another "pentax gem" in my hands. Boxed up, or not boxed up, and at 288, it didn't really matter already.

;-)

Enjoy the lens, shoot more!

In a nutshell, you don't care about the packaging as long as it's significantly cheaper and from reliable source, in this case from the agent direct. Cool:thumbsup:
