Just wondering..Any nikonians crazy over manual nikkors like me and still use them?

Both...

Been manual focusing decade ago since my Mamiya SLR days...

Those were the good days.. We were force to make every shot count..
36 "rounds", but always hoping for the 37th if lucky enough
every shot has to be one shot one kill.
Every other photographer is serious, knows his stuff and has something for you to learn from.
Unlike these days... all that sh!t around you, people who have the ability to make the images from an SLR look as good as my camera phone.

ok.. Im whining too much, back to working on my lab report.;)

Stingy shooter eh? With my FM2, instead of winding to 1 before shooting, I start shooting after 2 winds on the film advance thingy (whateveryou call it) at frame 0, and I can squeeze 37 shots consistently on a roll of Tri-X and FP4+. Never tried 38 though.

Only problem is after developing, sometimes the frame number on the negative is in between frames, which makes my labelling quite tedious.

I dun think so. The D80 would probably still be able to do a spot metering with a Non-Cpu lens. But currently only the D200 and the Pro bodies can do matrix metering (and only when you input the lens data onto the camera)

No.. D80 doesn't have aperture coupling like the D200.. so it doesn't know the aperture, so no metering..

I was thinking of an outing trip somewhere in May.

We can meet, shoot, interact and possibly try out each others' Manual lens collection..

I am willing to bring some of my stuff like 50f1.2, 55f1.2, 35f1.4, 105f2.5, 180f2.8 out and we can have a shooting and sharing session.

For starters i am thinking of somewhere like pulau ubin, i kinda miss the seafood there as well.

Also looking forward to seeing some of you like brian, lsisaxon, gohaj.. etc..

Do let me know if the idea is feasible. :)

Don't mind, but I'm now working in Shanghai, so a little difficult for me. Let me know how it goes, maybe I'll let you guys know when I'm back for my annual holidays.

Lucky you man..

Im feeling the urge to get out of here, preferbly to somewhere with some seasons.. Miss the days in ShenZhen you can walk around and exert without sweating. And Taiwan where its as hot but not humid.

How is Shanghai? taken any nice shots there to share? How is the photog community there? I knew some photogs while shooting in GuangZhou and Suzhou, still kept in contact via MSN..

Any value for money products there to bring back as well? I only know of JinBei lights coming from there... Are the prices good? :bsmilie:

How`s the prices for the MF stuff over there?

Have found some good bargains in the past (third time I'm posted here!), but best ones are the dusty looking samples in one of their camera shops, can go for half the price back in Singapore if the shop guy too lazy to clean and grade it. But its lottery, I've found very good samples after cleaning the lens, and I've also gotten scratched lenses (still performs great by the way).

There was one camera shopping place near the train station but they moved it somewhere down south near to the Nanpu bridge because of renovation (people say they moved there but I think that place looked permanent!).

I find Shanghai nice to shoot street shots, but in colour it doesn't look that great. Not as good looking as a MF lens on MF camera with black & white film. Best time to go out is 5-6am when people start coming out to prepare the shops and restaurants, and with a ISO1600 film. The best place for me used to be the old city (you can see the oval shaped borders on the map where the yuyuan gardens are), but they're starting to demolish the buildings. But us being photogs, its nice to take pictures of someone washing veggies in the morning and their neighbour's shophouse is destroyed.

But after so many times here in Shanghai, I'm a little bored, and looking for my next topic to shoot. I've done the old cities, the bund side of the bund, and the other side of the bund so far. Don't really like to take people portraits too much, as they expect you to pay them. Using mostly wide angle lenses so it prevents too much focusing. Occasionally will use the 105mm f2.5. Nice lens that one.

Just wondering.. Why dont you go digital?

I occasionally use film but almost digital all the way, the advances have come a long way.

U mentioned dusty lens, its dust or fungus? if its just dust and the coating not eaten then they probably still have good value. Probably you can bring more back for us if prices are good :bsmilie:

I did go digital, and I just got a D2H not too long ago (1-2 months) while stopping over in Japan. Nice small NEF files. Its nice to experiment, but I think other than the golden hours in the morning and evenings, b&w film is a little more versatile, can use anytime of the day without looking too harsh (with the right filters on). Still trying to experiment with the manual lenses, lucky I dont have any variable aperture zooms, so the lens info I enter for the widest zoom still exposes well for the longer end of the zoom (it seems).

Dusty lens = mostly dust, but when you see a lens that's been sitting there for some time (hence the dust), sometimes you dont knowif its also fungus. That's why its so cheap I think. But as long as the focusing mechanisms are still tight, aperture ring still smooth, blades still clean, can take the plunge already. But exotic lenses are not that easy to come by.

PUshing this thread back up: new potential product of lust... 45mm f2.8P.

Not sure if its being discussed already in this thread, but I'm starting to feel attracted to this lens. Too bad about the f2.8, but the slim pancake form factor is starting to interest me. When you have it on a modern DSLR wouldn't it look like a lens cap?

Anyone with any personal opinion for this lens, especially compared to the 50mm f1.4 and 1.8 AI/AIS? Since its more expensive than the two, are you buying the 45mm for the strange looks only?

Would love to pair it with my FM2 for that discreet look. Wont work with the D2H though!

My thinnest is the E series 50mmf1.8 without filter and cap about 1+cm only iirc :)

had 1 model asking me where was my lens when I was about to shoot her. end up laughing so hard. nice sharp lens, makes the D2H nice and flat to bring around but doesnt make it inconspicuous.

i've been doing my best to persuade dennis to part with his black body cap lens... sadly, (and i quote) it must be done over his dead body... :complain:

oh yeah, the 45P will work on all pro DSLR bodies, plus d200, and all the manual film camera. so, ur D2h shld not be a problem.

while the lens is a beauty, and a gem, i really baulked at the asking price. ended up getting the slightly faster, slightly wider voigtlander 40mm/f2 lens. not exactly pancake design. but, just as good. :)

What I meant was that the the D2H will never look discrete even with "no lens" like the 45mm. But if I find the impulse to get one I'll check it out and let everyone know. And once in a while fool a model or two with my invisible lens.

I have the 105/2.5 AIS, its a fantastic lens so you have my vote for manual AIS lenses! :) I also tried the 45mmP before, and it has full metering on the newer nikon DSLR bodies, but I hesistated to pick it up as I don't think it'll offer me much more than a simple 50/1.8

need advise. Does the focus confirmation dot light up on D200 using MF lens?

Yes but it does not have the left/right arrow indicator for focusing. so u need to guess right or left to turn.

I found out my dad has a couple of old lens.. some of them got fungus in them. Wondering is there any place that can clean the fungus from a 55mm 1.2 lens?

Thanks!

Perhaps TCW as well.. Not very sure. Have my own sources clean free :bsmilie:

Hopefully the fungus has not done any permanent damage.

For 55f1.2 you might need to mod to AI mount if you haven done so to use on ur DSLR.
