i saw someone using this camera last friday at the steve mccurry exhibit. looked really nice.

You better worry about yourself.. And your wallet... :bsmilie:

no worries,my wallet is empty now :bsmilie: saving for the year end model ;p

Poisoner!!

I never had the OM setup but intend to start building an M-mount series with the E-P1.

HEH. Me too. Are there extension tubes for this system? If I get this I'll probably get the 14-54mm plus 35mm macro, as I love macro. But if there are third party extension tubes it will burn a smaller hole in my wallet :D

And how are reviews for the 14-54mm, by the way? I've snooped around the lens thread for the 4/3 system and didn't get find info yet.

I did one under the "E-30 diary" review. Image samples there as well.

Ha ha... I think that's more of an advantage for those of us who need approval to buy it...
totally agreed... i "poisoned" my wife to use the LX3 in my last trip and now she acts as if that camera is hers liaoz... :P

I thought of that too, but that's going to cost you. M-mount lenses on ebay are even more expensive than OM ones ! Unless anyone has a stash somewhere that they are willing to let go at reasonable prices ;)

from the previews so far, the weakness of this camera is in the focusing speed. The Panasonic G1 beats it by a large margin. Focusing speed is important for me as I take pics of my kid. I've the E520, so I know how slow the contrast detect focus is like. I don't use that at all when I'm taking human subjects in motion. Guess I'll wait till Olympus buys the focus patent from Panasonic. The design looks great though. I wouldn't mind having it if not for the slow focus speed.

Actually it seems ok to me for a contrast detect focus. The only thing I do not like is how the lens has to search before locking focus - which makes AF tough to do in video mode. (so will have to MF I guess).

G1 is a nice camera also, and the AF speed is ok, but then again I have less of an expectation of a contrast detect AF over a passive AF sensor, which I find to be much faster.

I'm pretty sold on the camera already, just monitoring the reviews on it pertaining to video mode to see if it can do what I wanna do before I 'invest' $ in it :)

And I still can't decide between white and silver! :P

erm.. M mount lenses... focusing speed all depends on your hands and how well you know the lens... once used to it, no need even look, just turn focusing ring n snap.

Hehe... probably not going for Leica until I'm really warmed up but it still opens up a lot of doors to many excellent lenses. Currently eyeing on some voigtlander lenses starting with the 40/1.4 .

yeah i have the 40/1.4 .... only if they had a 20-25mm f1.4 too.. hehe

Are you sure? I just did a E-P1 and a GH1 test yesterday. Only the E-P1 with the 14-42 has a slow speed. Using the same lens (14-140mm Panasonic) on the both E-P1 and GH1 yields almost identical results. The GH1/G1 is only a slight fraction faster when using Panasonic lenses. I am one of the few people that has used all three cameras for speed tests.

If you don't believe me, join me for the photowalk this weekend. I have both cameras with me.

Maaaanz. You're holding the body that even the Oly showroom doesn't have. Unfair =p

All the units that was flown in advance were given to their PR company to be passed out accordingly to the reviewers and media companies. Well, if you are coming for the photowalk this weekend, you can have a hands on... so see you at the Photowalk! ;)

I know there are Panasonic fans out there, and you love your G1/GH1, and the good thing is, the Panasonic Venus Engine end up yielding a different image from the Truepic Engine.

I like the Panasonic (GH1, LX-3) as a video camera, but not as a still camera. The stills lack something that I am looking for in a still image.

Given the chance, if it is possible, I shall do a A-B comparison with various brands of cameras, but not to argue cases or whoever wins, but rather, helping people decide what kind of image they like so that they put their hard earned cash into the system of their choice.

Personally, I am a digital Leica - Olympus - Nikon - Pentax person (based on images yielded by the camera system). I avoid Canon, Sony and Panasonic for stills. But the latter three are creating some serious DSMC (Digital Still and Motion Camera) systems.

But if I am on a holiday, I would still use a E-System/Digital Pen camera for stills and a Panasonic LX-3 for video capture. Of course, if I have more cash, the GH1 is a no brainer.

The best DSMC costs too much, which is the Red camera. But that is comparing a supercar with my "average joe" sedan.

E-P1 has landed. Available from Friday onwards.

Thanks for the update!

Any ideas if the leather jacket/strap will be available at launch?

Also, would there by available UV filters (assuming the m4/3 needs one like any other DSLR).

Sorry for the newbie questions :)

Cheers

Leather jacket and straps might be available, but in limited numbers. Have to pre-order them, and they are very expensive (for the Japanese made ones).

There will be alternatives in different finishing, and from the rumorville in Hong Kong, Agnes B, Miu Miu, Paul Smith, etc are already looking at offering fashionable third party jackets and straps. Nothing is confirmed as yet. Pen is not just a camera, its a culture revived since the 50s.

Exciting times ahead.

ps : The B+W MRC filter would be the best for the lens, and since the diameter is so small for the E-P1 lenses, you should go for it. It is highly resistant to scratches and oil stains are easily removed. Some are also swearing by the new high end Hoya filters, but I stick to B+W for it has yet to let me down for the last two decades. (Again, personal preference and recommendation.)
