Next the Sigma Vs. the Mighty 85L.
These were shot on a tripod, fiancee as the "model" or test subject more rather. Camera was shot on manual mode, focus was also manually adjusted. I'm not sure how lens test are meant to be conducted, these are just purely meant for illustration.
For the sake of my marriage, let's skip the crops this time round
First the Sigma 85mm f1.4 at f1.4:
Next the Canon 85L at f1.4:
I think they're pretty damn close! You really have to pixel peek to tell them apart. Even so the differences between the 2 are not worth paying the extra coin on the 85L.
But of course our big bad friend has f1.2. And just for good measure here's a shot at f1.2 as well:
Speed wise, the 85mm f1.8 is the quickest out of the lot. The Sigma comes in really close! The 85L is the slowest. Manual focusing on the Sigma is easier compared to the Canon variants, the play on the focusing ring of the Sigma is similar to the feel of my Leica R lens compared to the looseness on the Canons.
My only gripe with the Sigma is the hood. I'm not sure why a "petal" shaped hood is included on a tele lens. I thought petals were meant for wider lenses. The hood is larger than the Canon 85 hoods and worse still it fits on really loose, it doesn't have that assuring click which is found on Canon screw on hoods like on the 35L. But nothing a little gaffer tape can't solve.
I'm looking forward to "real world" samples in the coming days, can't wait! I hope you guys found this informative.
Overall the Sigma is a real winner for me. I've been waiting on a lens like this for a long time!
EDIT:
I took this lens for a brief photowalk during my break yesterday. I have yet to process the pics, but AF performance wise focus was spot on and accurate. I suspect if there are any misfocusing it's really due to my own user error. Shooting at a DOF f1.4 on a tele lens is no easy feat for me, add moving subjects into the picture and its difficulty deepens.
I did have some difficulty focusing in some situations but I feel that it's most likely due to the camera rather than the lens, i.e. 5dmkii. I would have experienced the same difficulty using any other lenses for that matter.
I took some street shots and portraits of random people in Chinatown, will post them up when I can.
