IR filter Comparison: R72 vs ELP

When I first started experimenting with IR photos, the decision between an R72 filter and an ELP filter was dependent on fuzzy logic.
Thinking back, I laughed at myself when I remembered telling fatigue:
"Please give me the one that will make my leaves snowy white..."
He must have been laughing-out-loud inside.... what a blur newbie I am... :bsmilie:

I thought I'd just share a little comparison here.

Here is just a simple little example to demonstrate the difference between:

  • a Hoya R72 modified Canon 20D
  • an ELP (Edmund Long Pass) modified Canon 20D

ELP Before Channel Swapping direct from camera

... and after opening up in Photoshop and doing the Red-Blue channel mixer swap...
This was what I saw in a lot of IR photos then that made me wanted to give IR a try.
Certainly R72 and ELP are dramatic in their very own special ways.

I am not an experienced IR shooter.
But I thought I'd just share this little anecdotal comparison as until now I am still marveled by the difference between these two remarkable IR filters.
Would be happy to have any more input from anyone who has more experience from using both these filters.
Thanks for viewing.

Bro, Thanks for sharing and keep posting:) Hope to shoot with you guys soon:)

Its winter vs autumn. ;p
Thank you for sharing this I would like to know the different too.
Wonder if EPL colors are easier to pull in Hue and Saturation or it about the same.

So you collected your modded 20D with ELP filter. Thanks for sharing the info. ;)

Hello, simonseng.
You are most welcome.

Yes, you described it aptly - it's winter vs autumn.
Hoya R72 (cut off starts at 680mn, and 50% at 720nm) cuts off more visible lights than ELP (cut off starts at 665nm, and 50% at 690nm), thus one would definitely find more colours within an IR photo shot with an ELP.

Erm... yes, I did.
Life becomes a little meaningless when all I could do was just stand one side and look when SereneXMM did all the shooting.
So now I am getting my own back! Hehehe...

Anyway, since we are sharing some information here, today I thought why not I give my 50mm f/1.4 a run for its money.
Although it's been stated that the 50 f/1.4 is terrible for IR as it gave hot spot, and its brother 50mm f/1.8 doesn't, I thought just test it out for myself.

Hotspot on the EF 50mm f/1.4

So here it is ~
The grand 50mm f/1.4 at the aperture of f/6.3 with a magnificent hot spot smack right in the centre. ;).

It's a beautiful hot spot.
I am always happy to make some mistakes here and there and then report it to all my good friends and fellow CS-ers so that we all can have a good laugh and learn something along the way.

Here is another couple at f/6.3 with glorious hot spot.

Below: At aperture f/5.0, the 50mm f/1.4 also gives hot spot, although not as noticeable as at f/6.3.
The brown leaves interspersed in between are actually dead leaves that turn up brown in the IR photo, not hot spots.

Yes, you are right.
Although right at this moment the person who sees the world with the same coloured-eyes as yours is SereneXMM.
I have been thrown back my R72.. keke...
So that hot spot set of photos are the R72s'.

Don't tell me I didn't warn you.
The first time we met, you said she's not interested in IR photography.
All she wants is to use her ultra-wide angle lens :bsmilie:

You are right.
That is why I said I am a newbie cos I didn't know she would be so addicted to it.
But really thanks so much, fatigue.
You have been truly a great help and a great inspiration!

the difference between elp and r72 is that elp lets more light through.

hence the elp results would tend to have more "color" than the r72.

other than that it's just a matter of differing tones, etc. :)

you can also try p007 from cokin sooner or later, i guess. not sure whether it can be used to mod, but you can always try the filter on a normal camera.

if u are attaching an IR filter, the best is to mount it on tripod cos u'll need a long exposure time. when u expose it long on hand held, it will definitely be blurred due to hand/body movements.

u can try Camera Hospital at Sunshine Plaza, maybe u can google the name for the phone number. or u can try PM fatigue, i'm not sure if he does modifications now cos i believe he is quite busy recently.

Fatigue! GENTLEMAN! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
Actually, PCYL, if you don't mind me saying this - don't even need to go and look for that ELP filter yourself.
Just PM fatigue. He did all our cameras and we are very happy with them!
(No advertising for fatigue here. Just a compliment on jobs well done!)

Thanks Limwhow and takeshi.lum,
Maybe he is just like me who enjoys camera jigsaw puzzle :bsmilie:.

Hi PCYL, the filter is very brittle, you need something like this to cut the filter:
http://www.estore.com.sg/product_in...d=851&osCsid=5d0c43eb0a6e45e02b4b36cbe0dc03e9
(Got this info from Pat33)

And a watchmakers loupe would help you a lot to clean the filter

Another thread hijack.. :embrass:
