Vignetting using such filter will depends on the lens used. If like me using DX lens it may not help.

What filter system is this filter compatible with? The 3"x3" Lee filter system? In any case, unless the DSLR is a full frame one like the 1Ds, the multiplication factor of 1.5-1.6x would ensure that there is no vignetting when this filter is used on a 77mm lens.

The other alternative is to get the Cokin P007 Infrared filter. That will fit a 77mm lens with the 77mm adapter ring. I know because I have one and it fits properly on my 77mm lens. CP is selling this filter at $36.20 but unfortunately they have no stock at the moment (I bought the last one :D ). Do note that this filter though it is rated at the same Wratten 89B as the Hoya R72 filter, is not completely opaque and may not work well for those DSLRs with long exposure time requirements for IR photography.

Vignetting usually only occur at the extreme wide angle end of the lens. The rest of the range is fully useable. My 77mm Tokina 19-35mm lens will vignet only at the 19mm end if I use a 58mm R72 filter on it. My EF-s lens does not vignet at all.

Have you tried a 72mm (or thereabout) filter on your 77mm DX lens to see if it suffers from vignetting problems?

Wah, suddenly got so many different filter appearing? Ilford SFX filter and cokin P007? What are their effects? good? Cheap?

But the Tokina 19-35 is a FF lens not a DX one so it does not use the full path. The DX one uses the full path. One reason I wanted to be able to cover the 77mm range is because many of my lens are 77mm range especially thr wide angles. I only have a 62mm IR no 72mm ones and 62mm vignets badly. I did consider 77mm but the price is way out and not normal for such a filter and build. A large sq filter may be usable but I guess it could be troublesome to use.

I guess the Cokin P filter is the only cheap alternative for you then. If you don't already have the Cokin P holder and lens adapter ring, the total cost would be:
Filter Holder : $10
Lens Adapter Ring: $16
Cokin P007 Filter: $36.20
Total: $62.20 - Cheap Cheap !

This filter would probably work much better on a Nikon DSLR than a Canon one since the exposure time needed is so short for IR on Nikon DSLRs.

Thanks for the info. Will consider it.

Max2.8 used to use a A80, perhaps he may be able to help.

Bad overcast today. Here's a couple to share.

Look for Florence @ MS Color, she'll be able to help, but better check if have to order R72.

;)

Does this picture work for you guys? No channel mixing, levels and cropped.

Hi teerex,
Yes, I like it. I also like the 2nd pic in the previous post 3 hours back.

Hi Puakk, with 60 dollar you cannot buy lens, the IR filter will take half of your budget, and you need a extension tube to put filter.

I have some used lenses and a IR filter that I used to use on my A80, have already PMed you.

Call me if interested.

Cheers
Max 2.8

Wah Teerex, full steam ahead huh? So on, every time got new pix to show us ;) I really like them, nice  , lacks a little contrast but I think its because of overcast.

Organise a outing leh.... you so free can recce new location mah... :bsmilie:

Thanks Pablo. WB was set with R72 on in bright sunlight on a patch of grass.
When I'm satisfied with the results I get with that WB, I leave it, and don't set again.

The different colours I get is from PS. But I personally like those without channel mixing, like the one "Esplanade in Infra Red" where it looks a bit Sepia.
and the trees are white.

Ya, overcast this afternoon. I like that picture too. Point noted about the lack of contrast, will see what can be done with PS.

So impatient for outing? Let's wait till ark19 and vortex get their filters first. I think there are many places to shoot in Sg. Too bad I have to depend on public transport and not very familiar with directions, else I can really recce.

Anyone know of any good places to shoot IR that is easily accessible by public transport? Maybe THIS LIST can be of help, but locations are a bit outdated.

Vortex, ark19 - quick leh, Max and Panda itching already.

Hi teerex,
The CWB you have set; do you keep the same one (because it is ok for you)
or do you re-do the CWB each time you go out to shoot IR ?

If you do re-do the CWB each time, is it because of different over all light
for each day and time of day, thus changing the value of green ?

Hope this question makes some sense.

Thinking about it  I would guess it would be best to re-do the CWB
each different location and time of day (also if overcast or very sunny etc)

how much would a extension tube cost and how much lens can it hold?

Once I'm happy with the colours I get, I use the same CWB for all my shoots. I don't reset for every shoot. But bearing in mind that the CWB was set in bright sunlight, best results could only be got from shooting in bright sunlight. As my CWB was set in bright sunlight and today's shoot was an overcast. That constitutes to the slight brownish cast and dark buildings in the pics.

Ideally I think CWB should be set with every outing, if the brightness is the same throughout the shoot on that particular day. But weather here in Sg is very unpredictable. It was shining very brightly this morning, but by the time I got out to shoot it was overcast and began to drizzle.

How's the weather over there these past few days, your 4 days of rain should be over by now. Managed to get a day's leave to go out and shoot?

Hi Teerex, I also itchy lei! U know how terrible it is to shoot IR on D70 with a 52mm R72

Called Lords, no stock yet. Went by Alan Photo, haven't mention thread size he already guess it's 67mm. Looks like lots of demand but no supply
