Sure I'm still interested in a group outing to discuss and shoot IR. Any experts willing to impart some tips and help some newbies on IR photography? We can confirm about date/time when we have the group of interested people.

I posted this question in another forum, hope to get some clarifications. Will update you when there are any responses.

Well, I can certainly confirm that the Hoya R72 will work on the 20D. I can also confirm that the kit lens can be used to take quite decent IR photos on the 20D as well.

Here's a 'coloured' IR shot I took today with this combo:

Viewed all your IR shots, including those in the Canon sub-forum.
Beautifully captured  How did you get the colors in the shots, any post processing e.g. channel mixing?

cool............

To get the skies to be blue or dark blue to black in coloured IR photos, the red and blue channels must definitely be swapped in the Channel Mixer.

I think that the use of the Hoya R72 (which is actually not 100% opaque to visible light) and the long exposure times needed by Canon DSLRs for IR photography might help to a certain extent in producing such coloured IR photos. I have used the same filter on digicams (like the Nikon Coolpix 950) which could be handheld when taking IR photos but the results are very much monochromatic in nature and can't be post-processed to look like those taken by the Canon 10D & 20D.

Thanks tomcat, will try out some images with channel swapping.

Thanks for the clarification tomcat. nice work you got there. hey who knows we can actually start a IR photography group here. Something which is quite rare with digital ya?!. well hope to explore more in this aspect.

To know what real infrared photography is like, look at those captured on infrared film and the appropriate filter. From there, compare your digital photos to see what has varied and adjust.

Does anyone have infrared B&W photos shot on film with a red 25A filter compared to an R72 one?

For me, having a couple of infra shots looks nice for variety, but when you have an album full of them, the uniqueness is lost. Wedding photography outdoors in infrared is cool, but definitely not all. Besides, it's very expensive.

I've not seen any IR shots done on film, or for that matter I do not think many newbies have seen such shots. I would be an eye opener to see some. It would be good if anyone has some IR film shots to show for us to compare.

Fully agree that an album of IR shots would be dull and uninteresting.

btw...any idea about IR films for MF??

Currently there is a infrared photo exhibition carry on in PSS at Selegie Art Centre, Level Three. Free admission. 5- 21st Nov. All pix were shot in film and you can compare the film effect with digital. Thsi is first ever infrared medium pix display in Singapore.

I shot with D100 and Sony F828, not bad too.

I like to form a special infrared group enthuasists, and I 'll to call it "SnapIeRs", anyone ?

Thanks for you tip on the exhibition, will definitely go tomorrow.

As for the infrared group, I'm in. But you got to be patient with a slow learner.

Don't mind joining but wait let me get a IR filter first.
Have never been in to IR at all.

As I mentioned earlier, I posted your query regarding IR capabilities with the 20D in another forum. Lots of responses, you may like to have a look at them HERE . Lots of info and sample pics.

If I'm not wrong tomcat is one of the guys who responded there.

Tomcat,

Did channel mixing, swapped the red and blue channels on some IR pics. They definitely look better with a blue sky. But the foliage, especially trees tend to be too much off white, slightly brownish. I tried "Selective Color" to help bring some green to the trees, and it helps.

Guess a lot can be done to IR pics with pp.

With all the excitement about IR. I am sure we could be seeing more IR photo being posted here is CS. comeon pple, share your IR picture, especially those that are shot in film. this will give us a real taste of what IR is all about. the color it render will surely show another aspect of photography.

anyway will start a list of pple interested in a IR outing. my suggestion is to have a dicuession about IR first so that we will have a general understanding. then we shall move on to SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT

interested for IR discuession
