only death and taxes are certain. if your first shot is always black and the camera hangs requiring a power off/on with "ERR" in your viewfinder then its the same problem. it was only recently - a month ago? - that sony isolated the problem and issued a replacement notice although only in US and Japan websites. i called sony here and a Ms Sabrina from the service centre confirmed there was a staff notice to that effect. my only unhappiness with the ssc is they never contacted the local km folks or issued any such notice - act blur? :dunno:

Actually my camera has never issued a ERR warning... it just gave me consecutive black frames until I switch off and removed the batteries before starting all over again... that happened about a few times... then I knew what the black frame problem was...

just send in my camera this afternoon!
Waiting for it to return in a week time... :)

They probably will return it within 3 days...

how did you order/ buy it, from the service centre or direct from Mr Seah and the guys that call you to clarify your cam fault?

Just tell them that u get a black frame on your first shot and that SONY Japan has issued a replacement notice... the SSC has two counters, one for SONY and the other for KM... the staff who man the KM booth have some idea about the replacement thing... but often the SONY counter staff will double up to serve the KM counter... that's where they don't know what's going on nor are they really interested... so u have to describe the fault. Just put down "first shot black frame" will do. The technician will likely call you if he doesn't know what u wrote down... and the technician is knowledgeable, name's Seah... he was from KM and dealt with the DSLRs.

oh, i see.. ill be looking for free time to go to ssc.. hehe thx guys for ur replies..

Hi guys,

Bought the LCD Protector from SSC parts counter. Ordered from them when I sent my camera in to replace the Cam Assembly, arrived within a week. It's the original 7D clear hard plastic protector that came with the camera. It's pretty cheap considering that it cost $15 per piece when the camera was first launched!

:) Sony SC just called me. Asked me want to buy LCD protector for $3 anot
haha... bought 2 !

Looks like you got special treatment heh.. just collected my 7d, svc turnaround very good, again 3 working days only. Just paid for 3 pcs of MPP too. Better buy before stock runs out! Wonder if sony is still manufacturing these parts...

I thought mine was badluck problem when I sent my KM 7D to SSC on Feb 2006, for camera 3 months old camera. The camera was sitting idle until I brought it for my holiday, I got the krr..kr..kr... sound then blank image when I shoot with the camera. I took out the baterry then it works again. I got this problem until the 4 days of my trip when the camera totally refused to work. I sent it to SSC they told me they change AF module and shutter assy, I thought I got lemon copy of KM 7D.
I am a very light user until now less than 3k frames logged in my KM 7D. SO far I don't have any problem until now, fingers crossed.

They order the LCD protector from Japan. Unlikely it's existing stock... it's likely that they are keeping the parts bin full with many of the parts we need... especially with the cam assembly replacement... likely they are still churning these things out at the factory... just like the batteries.

i hope so. do you think at some point they will discontinue the dynax/ maxxum line when more new dslr models are launched or if the new ones are not doing so well?

I hope not (keeping my fingers crossed).

They will stop supporting the KM models once (a) they have passed the minimum support time frame as stipulated by US & Euro law (b) they have rolled all the cameras in all segments they want to compete in... that would give them good justification to stop support KM stuff... i foresee that in about 1-2 years time frame...

yay my camera just came back and the black frame problem gone..

I think most larger sony galleries sell replacement caps for the lenses and the camera body.

just an update. sent my camera in for first shot black frame a few weeks ago. was done in less than a week. they also helped me replace some bits and pieces (rubber peeling off or drop out etc) for a token sum. paid about $13 altogether, including gst and the $10 they always charge.

haven't been using my dslr much lately, but as far as i can tell, no new problem.

oh yah, body caps... not sure about other shops, but service centre definitely can buy for a few bucks. may need to wait if they have no stock though.

In case you don't mind Sony brand one, It is available for sale together with other accesories in Sony Wisma Atria.
