11_Spituk_prayer_flags.jpg

Fluttering Prayer Flags of Spituk Gompa.
These prayer flags are commonly seen throughout Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan and Ladakh. As the flags wave in the wind, the mantras and prayers printed on the flags are carried by the wind and their blessings bestowed upon others. I thought it was important to convey the sense of fluttering of the flags and attempted to do so with this photo.

This is an interesting and refreshing take!
Most of the ones I have seen are static. Indeed a bit more life injected!

I thought the motion blur in #42 however looked abit distracting. But personal opinion.

Regards
Ryan

As playful as a monk.

Roy,
Very nice photos. You have a great eye for detail  Do post more.

Ladakh and Zanskar have always been on my list of places to go...The farthest I've been to was Manali and the surrounding places. Your photos of Hidimba temple etc. invoke some old memories :)

Chulichan Nunnery is located beside Rizong Monastery. The young nuns there undergo lessons in English, Hindi and Philosophy of Buddhism.

The nuns were just as curious about us as we were about them. They were kind enough to show us their living quarters and classrooms.

Somehow this photo reminds me of the old-style arcade game where you have to smash the heads of moles that pop up using a huge mallet.

13_Thiksey_Monastery.jpg

During the early morning Puja (prayers), a group of young novice monks ran out of the prayer hall to collect metal jugs. I wondered what the metal jugs contained and what they were for.

The monks placed the metal jugs outside the prayer hall and waited until all five jugs had arrived before proceeding back into the prayer hall. It turned out that the jugs contained water which was mixed with flour and served as breakfast for all the monks in the prayer hall.

Just as we were walking away from Thiksey Monastery, we spotted a brightly-coloured lizard. So here's some wildlife photography ;)

13_Changla_La_Soldiers.jpg

To get to Pangong Tso, we had to go across the world's third highest pass - Changla La. These soldiers are posted to guard the pass for 6 months at a time. They were friendly enough to chat with us and even agreed to pose for photos.

Pangong Tso - a breathtaking saltwater lake. In the sunlight, the waters literally reflects all shades of blue. The mountain range in the distance is within Tibet's borders. In winter, the entire lake freezes over and locals are able to go over to Tibet with their horses or jeeps to trade with the Tibetans.

awesome series!! wonderful details and colors!

love pic #18 :)

I sneaked into the kitchen at Spangmik, Pangong Tso and had a great time interacting with the "chefs". They were eager to show me the food, occasionally looking at me with bemused smiles as I kept shooting away. They must be wondering why anyone would be interested in how chapati was made.

I've never made tomato soup before. But to prepare it with ketchup?! Is that right?!

highly unlikely fresh. the place dun get many stayers and food supplies and storage is very limited. even clean mineral water and milk runs out when requested for, or reserved for the next meal and not as requested.

The night scene at Pangong Tso, with the tents and the mountains in the background. I regret not taking night pictures of the lake itself.

Sometimes you have to go off the beaten track to experience just a little bit more.
