Increasing interest in RF

RF is more discreet for street photography... whenever i bring up my DSLR, somehow most of the time i got spotted and shoo off :sweatsm:

actually, it is very subjective lah...

if one talks about discreet, using a long lens on a dslr.. isn't that more discreet..? one takes the photo (hiding somewhere) and no one will know (like a paparazzi).

one can also argue using a compact camera (e.g. grd3) is more discreet because grd3 is small and its a compact. these days leica actually does attract attention too because it's "unusual". you actually get noticed... "hey is that your dad's camera?" "hey cool camera"

i personally think any camera can take any photos - sometimes rf has some advantage somtimes dslr sometimes a compact..

Nowadays most discreet camera is iphone4 lol

oh yes, one more observation, RF lens tend to be prime, and they have DOF markings. Not sure if modern SLR lens have any markings at all. This, of course, is essential if one were to scale focus (ie. in distance) rather than through the prism.

most modern DSLR dedicated lenses have a small window to show DOF markings.... however its very tight and extremely basic....... most manual primes have a dof scale on the barrel that is MUCH easier to read

Yep, saw those windows before, quite useless lei, damn tight.......

not easily visible like the RF lenses or old FD / AIS lenses

Below are some shots I took some times back (the first photo got selected by Eye e City, btw :) ). They are all shot using my humble Canon 1000D DSLR fitted with 35mm lens (about 50mm range, for crop sensor).

I think any camera is just a tool that suits the photographer, not the other way round. Whichever suits you suits you fine. Reviews or common sayings just take it as a pinch of salt. After all, its you who is making the shots.

i am ok with using my existing setup. i tried to stealth myself as much as possible (not taking those sneaky shots), but my cam + lens always gives me away and ppl start to shoo me off before i get to shoot haha.

maybe there is really too much DSLR users in singapore and it kinda irritates most ppl when they get 'shot' or they felt 'threatened' by such shots (maybe they scare that their photos will be misused or uploaded to stomp for some reasons).

my trip to HK and Melbourne is very fruitful and especially Melbourne.

Melbourne

HK

Basically i can shoot in HK and Melbourne and ppl wun care a hoot what i am doing. I can take my shots freely.

Guess I am one of those die-hard SLR users who's finally discovering the joy of RF photography :) I fully share your sentiment about the dangers of pointing DSLRs with massive zoom lenses at innocent passers-by. I've been shooed off more than once... This shot below for eg, would not have happened if I were carrying an SLR:

Shot with NEX5 and Voigtlander 35mm by the way... I'm loving it! Unfortunately, I'm beginning to fantasise about Noctilux and Summicrons, oh dear.... :o

Shoot with DSLR, people with P&S camera looked at you...

Shoot with RF, people with DSLR looked at you...

But those with P&S camera leave you alone...

HAha so true! :bsmilie:

I shoot street with both RF and DSLR.

Some shots with my DSLR. All using 50mm Prime.

RF is very easy to focus in low light, that's a plus point for me. My DSLR tends to hunt at night.

I have seen more people with RFs around though, that's a good thing imo.

I am using 5DMKII + 35mm f1.4 most of the time for street shoots (not a crop body + 50mm which is equal to ard 80-85mm and you dun have to stand so near to the subject). And if you refer to my past street shoots (HK and Melbourne), i really go up pretty close (about 2-3 steps away from them) to the subject at times. But i guess Singaporeans (majority, especially those elderly people) doesn't like a huge cam + lens to shoot them right in the face or too close to them.

So I am still firm with what I said, compared to a RF over my setup (5DMKII + 35mm f1.4), RF is definitely more discrete/smaller and wun so attract stares and shoo offs cos not many (especially those who dun know much about photography) will think it is a RF but just a normal point and shoot cam and this is common!

I dunno why, but compare using point and shoot, it usually wun attract much attention, but using DSLR, everyone or sure bound to have someone to look at you (in Singapore that is).

and yes, that's how 'big' my cam + lens is:

Im using a 1.3x crop so shooting at around 65mm, camera is huge too :(

In Singapore what I usually have to do is to pre-compose way before and then go up and take a quick shot.

Otherwise just strike up a friendly conversation and ask them for an candid shot, that usually works too.

I'm interested in RF, but too much a digital guy, what with shooting random things and garnering 100 over shots in a few hours (if I go to a museum, that would be the norm). I'd be exhausting 3 rolls of film in one go!

yah. no choice, i just find that Singapore very hard to take street shoots (those shoo offs, hand blocking etc). Maybe i think stomp traumatized Singaporeans too much haha :bsmilie:

I very much enjoy shooting in HK and Melbourne. they are more receptive to such shoots.

same like you too... for me i am too trigger happy... :bsmilie: so i guess DRF will be more suitable for me, but getting an m9 is so expensive now... i can only afford to buy it with top up by selling my existing setups (my existing cam + lens + flash) ... but no more $$ to buy lens

maybe i just had to wait for a more affordable DRF to be introduced to the consumer market.

there is more affordable digital rangefinder in the market, if you dont mind epson RD1.
you know why rangefinder mostly all films?
becoz most people using rf loves film. :bsmilie::bsmilie:

i LOVE FILM...

the feelin is just different.

Just 2 days ago in Macau along a street was an old lady sitting by an ancient door steps n she just smile at me waving her hand at my direction, and my instant tot was to snap her...

so i quickly took a shot of her and the whole day, im feeling so good...i just kept telling my friends "i got a shot"!!!

Amazingly i have not even seen the picture and im so satisfied!:)

Bro i assure u that once u r on film, u will choose ur shots correctly...why do u wan to garner 100 shots and just basically use 10 to 20?

so while u r using film, u will find that you shoot more precise and u really think before u shoot.

I can think of some more.

9. Buy super fast lens, only to get frustrated at missing focus with wide open aperture.

10. Sell super fast lens, only to buy another version of super fast lens to try (maybe focusing tab smoother).

11. Same result. finally learn that big aperture very hard to focus.

12. Even if 9, 10 and 11 do not happen, may get bored with Noctilux because 90% of the picture is blurred without content.

13. Go back to slower lenses. slower is more steady..

All RF shooter should stick to 1 lens :sweatsm:
and forget about anything over 50mm
and like what artspraken said, i am sticking to f2, nothing wider
