Image and sharing thread - Sigma 120-300 OS HSM Sports

wow hehe how was the morning there? not as wet as it was near my house area hopefully. share some shots from the morning outing if possible

I just took delivery of my Sigma 2X TC last evening, on initial testing, I found that the centre sharpness is even better than my canon 2X iii! however i tried it this morning again and unfortunately found that while my canon TC allows stacking with full AF paired with the sigma 1.4, the 2 sigmas do not stack well together, AF was severely crippled...

now wondering if i shld keep the Sigma 2x TC for better centre sharpness or the EF 2X TC for the stacking capabilities + weather proofing

hahaha... ya got this problem as well, sigma 2X they put the cylinder way too long at the back which is not necessarily i think, may be thats the way they use to avoid stacking with canon.

i already put my EF 1.4X II for sell, and waiting for kenko 1.4X DGX to come on tuesday, lets see what is the result.

I would rate the Canon IQ as best, followed by Sigma and lastly Kenko.

Canon best for IQ due to minimal vignetting sharpness and added benefit of weather sealing. However not "stackable" and largest in size due to the protruding lens element.
Sigma 2nd, actually sharpness is up there with the canon. Vignetting is more noticeable though, but has the benefit of being "stackable" with my canon 2X iii. smallest among all 3 as well, easiest to carry ard.
Kenko. Image quality is good, stackable. However, built quality wise is not such a tight fit with my Sigma and my 6D/1D. The resulting "looseness" makes AF accuracy a hit and miss at times. sometimes IQ can be up there with the canon, sometimes back/front focused.

i had 2 copies of kenko, one was my old one, and one was a brand new one ordered online. both didnt fit my camera bodies / lenses tightly enough.

in the end i kept the sigma for the IQ, consistent tight built quality and stackability.

now thinking about my 2X decision hehe... which to keep. siding more with the canon now....

should i canceled the kenko and change to sigma before they shipped or modified my sigma 2x to get work with 1.4x canon

Hey man, nice meeting you. My day was great, 1st visit to SBWR before heading to the zoo to meet my bro in law.

Also my 1st test run of the 120-300mm S after calibration. My wife bought the 70-200 F2.8 MK II, also 1st time test run.

We both had some awesome pictures both in SBWR and the ZOO.

Perhaps the kenko can fit well with the sigma 2x? I didn't know the sigma can be modified to fit the canon hee

definitely kenko can use one, the front part doesn't protruding much, but saw what you write above, keno not as tight fit with the body and lens, thats a bit worried me, is the wobble that much or so so?

from what i see, you just need to open the back element of the sigma TC and remove the back part, and you need to cut it hehehe....thats if you brave enough to do it, other wise i suggest don't

Hi Ricleo, I was wondering do u really need to stack the TCs?
I can see my 2x III IQ degradation and seldom use it,unless I really need the reach but I won't do heavy crop on it. However if the reach is still acceptable in bare, I find that at 100% crop still has better IQ compare to the 2x.i can't imagine when stack.

P.S: it's my personal feel on Canon lens not the Sports lens though.

#2 & 3 seems to be off focus on the subject.

to be honest i never really used the 2X TCs before until i started using the 70-200II and now the sigma sports lens. Yes image quality takes a hit somewhat but with a little bit of PS i find the images can look amazing.

on the need to stack 1.4 with 2X, I guess it's not really a need, more of a "want" for more reach occasionally. since I am keeping a 1.4X for times i want 420F4 reach, and a 2X for times I want a 600 F5.6 reach, might as well have a combination that allows stacking to get 840mm. I find for static landscapes such as moon shots for example, having that extra reach is quite nice. I find that the Sigma 1.4 stacks quite nicely with the canon 2Xiii, much better than the kenko did.

sure. when the moon peeks out from the cloud and rain we've been having lately hehe...

this was what i got previously with the canon 2X + kenko 1.4 stacked at F8. no cropping, full frame shot

ah... the 150-500... I really miss that lens sometimes when lugging the 120-300 around. this was a really light lens for its 500mm reach

some images from that 150-500... really sharp at 500 F6.3 for a 1k+ lens
