Image and sharing thread - Sigma 120-300 OS HSM Sports

the good thing about this sigma lens is that you can AFMA using the sigma calibration dock itself. so even if your camera body has no AFMA function, you can do so.

I didnt need to do any AFMA on my lens.

Hi,
Very impressive... even with 2x TC (or I should said Canon 2x TC III are really good).

Anyway, do you need to do any AFMA for the lens?? Was thinking of upgrading my Canon 400mm F5.6L with this one, but my 60D had no AFMA.

Have a nice day.

hehe thanks! i started out with a 70-300 too.... on a 350D.... this is an expensive hobby

Very very awesome photos!
Even though I know I'll never really need a superzoom... (cos I probably only use my 70-300 only less than 10% of the time now) I am still impressed by your work!
Good job!!!

Hahaha this is really a poisonous thread. TS is poisoning me bad.

Very impressive with the sharpness! :thumbsup:

Definitely a top class lens from Sigma. Thanks for fuelling the desire :)

I have the old non OS and new OS version. Boths are sharp. This lens is a real value for money! I mainly uses it with a Sigma 2x and getting good results. The only down side is the weight....3.1Kg for the OS version and extender. :(

Photos from the new version;

Photos from the old non OS version (still sharp!);

Hopefully, this can helps those who wants a lens for wildlife.

Very nice! The new sports version is even heavier at 3.3kg without extenders

Images from this lens certainly looks great.
but i noticed the images at 100% cropped looks pretty soft,it might be due to non-sharpening or web quality.
were u shooting in Raw or Jpeg?

with extenders, and double that, image sharpness will dramatically degrade but nevertheless, still a value for money lens :)

hehe the first set of 100% crops posted are sharp enough to me, those at 300 2.8 are typically shot at higher iso and the croc shot was thru glass enclosures at the zoo. With the 1.4 and 2x extenders (non-stacked), l find them to be perfectly acceptable as well.

the most recent crops with stacked converters (840mm), yes i wld agree at 100% they appear less sharp, but for results with a 2x iii Tc + kenko 1.4 and shooting thru so much atmosphere i think they are not too shabby. i think this is one of my best moon shots so far hehe...

oh ya... i shot at jpegs portrait mode and crops were OOC without additional sharpening. images posted for web were resized at longest length of 1600 pixels, but i think CS forum codes auto resizes them to 1000 px max.

yup kiwira, hehe totally value for money to be able to achieve 120-300 f2.8, 180-420 F4 and 240-600 F5.6 consistent performance. 840 F8 is a little difficult to use especially handheld hehe... not a combo i wld use too often apart from the occasional moon shots

Haha, I was too engrossed in pixel peeping to view the sharpness and didn't really paid much attention in the focal length and extender being used. Looking back now, I agree that without extender the 100% cropped is still pretty sharp. As for the moon shot, I would prefer to keep it at the second image being cropped slightly instead of 100% Or u could try shooting at higher F stop between F11-16 for sharper details may help for further cropping. Lastly I do agree that this is certainly a value for money lens without a doubt. I would try to avoid using it with extender or at most a 1.4x.

This should be a great lens for the coming F1 if u do shoot.

yup. the 100% crops are just to show what the lens is resolving. not what i would typically post without processing. i haven't tried this lens with my wife's 60D yet, wonder what kind of performance it will be on APS-C with the TCs.

Probably will be at F1 on the practice day just to give the AF tracking a good workout.

Hi guys just bought this len. I noticed that when the motor stops after focusing, theres a quite noticeably "Ta" sound is that normal? during focusing the focusing is quiet, however whenever the focus locks on theres a "TA" sound quick noticeable is is normal? The retailer told me its normal, as this is a huge 105mm len, thus the motor will sound louder when it stop focusing! Thus i am asking those who own this this got this problem? Mine is the OS (no sports version). Sorry understand this is a (Sports version thread).
2nd questions, i am a canon user, using the canon TC2 or Sigma TC2 with this len would be better?

Thank you

The sound is likely to be the OS. Try switching off OS and see if the sound is still present.

I only have the Canon tc2 mk iii and it has given me good results. How much did u pay for the os hsm version?

The "Ta" sound should be from the OS. Mine too, OS very noise.
I don't have the Canon. I using the Sigma EX 2x, not bad.
Heard from some users on the net (link; http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=934592&page=267). The Canon 2x mark 3 is sharper then the Sigma, but a lot more expensive.
