All have hotshoe, just not TTL. But auto mode works well too, if the flash used has it.
If you are shooting event, an external flash with TTL and one without TTL make a lot of different as you don't have time to adjust your flash output. Or simply easier to adjust it on the camera's flash compensation than pressing varies button on the flash.
If there is really no different, dslr would not have so many pins on it flash (just 1 is enough to trigger) and I guess less people would buy original flash (eg: SB900 & 580EX2) and just go for cheap third parties flash with no TTL function. :bsmilie:
