I really think Prosumer Camera can take sharper pictures than DSLR + Cheaper lens

All have hotshoe, just not TTL. But auto mode works well too, if the flash used has it.

If you are shooting event, an external flash with TTL and one without TTL make a lot of different as you don't have time to adjust your flash output. Or simply easier to adjust it on the camera's flash compensation than pressing varies button on the flash.

If there is really no different, dslr would not have so many pins on it flash (just 1 is enough to trigger) and I guess less people would buy original flash (eg: SB900 & 580EX2) and just go for cheap third parties flash with no TTL function. :bsmilie:

Those images are stopped down and resized. :)
The images from 75-300mm will look nice if I resize and stop down.

Most 18-200mm lens aren't very good in quality, with the exception of Canon's 18-200mm.

urmm....did you even bother to look at the thread i posted? so many 100% crops plastered around the first page.

And of course they are stopped down. That's why i say that you as a friend should be teaching your friend how to stop down the lens in good light and upping the ISO in low light to make the best use of his DSLR with all in one zoom lens instead of complaining here about his actions of buying something against your prosumer recommendations.

since he already bought it, teach him how to use it.

Yes. I know how TTL works and its advantages. Auto mode though not as advanced as TTL is also quite 'auto' with minimal settings.

BTW I'm not the one that is saying prosumer is better than DSLR. so please back off and take it easy. Cheers.

I think you got me wrong too, I never say that prosumer/PnS are definitely better than dslr. I would say they each have their advantage & disadvantages. :)

I was only correcting the part "auto mode works well too", the reason why I chosen the FZ50 beside it having manual zoom/focus ring, flip LCD, dual control dials & Leica lens (F2.8~3.7) is because it is the only non-dslr camera with all these and had a TTL hot-shoe flash connector. :thumbsup:

Not really vent my frustration, as I am thinking turning this to a discussion topic.
Don't you think it is more worth it to get a super-zoom prosumer than a DSLR with lens like 75-300mm, 18-200mm non-OS/VC etc

@hoppie, I will appreciate if you can re-read my first post, last line espeically.

read liao leh, but i using kit lens wor, and the effects and quality still better than my Canon SX1is leh. Err..........so you using what prosumer? you owned both top of the range Prosumer and an entry level SLR?

My cam is a A330 (Entry level) + 18-55mm F3.5 - 5.6, i think mine is much crappier than what you have posted, don even have zoom that beat my Canon SX1is

That is one thing: Stopping down means less light isn't it. That does not work for nightshots either...
I learnt that when I compare my S5 IS with SX20 IS inside canon VIVO showroom.
ISO 200 F3.5 400mm = ISO 800 F5.7 400mm -1/3 exposure.

@Anson
Wow, FZ50 is pretty amazing. I used have a S2 IS that I sold it off before I enlist. Then I got an Olympus Superzoom yhat really looks very good specs on paper. Only realise it is not my kind of camera after I bought it. lolx Sold the olympus and got back S5 IS, that's when I started appreciating F2.7-F3.5 lens. That was 2 years ago. ;)

@hoppie
I am using 350D with 17-55mm. The 75-300mm III USM belongs to my friend. :)

TS....your arguments may really be a little simplistic. Perhaps thinking deeper into the detailed performance of both will convince you better. :)

I'm not nitpicking. Just pointing out that everyone's price range, comparison range etc is different. It is all subjective. By saying broadly it is in the same price range is misleading in itself. BTW price guide says 1250. The only one below 1200 is w/o GST.

exactly. thats why youre nit picking;p. it IS subjective so what you are pointing out is ridiculously redundant.:sticktong so again i will repeat to you that the point of my original stand was a noise control comparison. you want a closer price to the g11, i already gave in to you and compared the 450d which is BTW better at noise control than the 500d. i don't think i need to highlight that i said ABOUT $1100 and i dint say it was inclusive of GST. Its wrong for you to assume that i did mean that.

@TS.. btw why did your friend get the 75-300mm USM?

The Canon S5 IS has a focal length of 6mm to 72mm.

It is strange that a comparison has been made between this camera and a DSLR mounted with an 18-270mm lens / 75-300mm lens. They have very different focal lengths!

72mm is 72mm.

The only basis for comparison at the tele-end of a S5 IS and an 18-270mm lens is to view the 100% crop of the 18-270mm @ 72mm setting.

That said, the image quality of a S5 IS at 72mm may very well be superior to a DSLR mounted with a Tamron 18-270mm @ 72mm. I have no idea on this.

Whilst the image quality of the 18-270mm may be suspect, it still has a genuine 270mm reach.
