Indeed it doesn't. There already is not enough of seats and the problem will get worse with the population increase. My suggestion doesn't address that problem or solves the seating problem 100%. What is does is that if you really want/need a seat, then you pay for it. Think twice before rushing blindly in.

Should I pay more also if I need to use the lift instead of the stairs ?? Or should MRT charge us for using the escalator too ?? Is it better in your mind... that as long as you could afford to buy a sit... a poorer, person must stand about and watch you ?? What about a poor old senior citizen who can't afford that extra dollar or two for the seat... too bad for them iszit ??
Please lah... if you could afford all this 'extra' $$$ for seats.... go take a cab and leave one more space for those of us that could ill afford such things...
Wa... talk money no need so strong reaction lar... Well, you could charge the senior citizens nominal 10cent or even free in that case. Essentially paying a deposit with refund after seating. The charge should be such that if one can afford to take MRT, then paying for the seat is not significantly more. Heck, might as well charge by distance with min sum for normal charges. Makes everyone think twice before rushing for the seats the moment the doors open.
btw, when I do see visitors being charged for using the lift to go up a pavilion in China. Coming down is free. Yes, it's overseas and it's not a daily mode of transport but the same concept applies.

Who are those people need seat? Just look at the signage.
1. Pregnant woman â those who have difficulties in standing up for long trips. Obviously those who have more than 5 months old tummy. You can tell the difference of how big it is.
2. Elderly people with cane â those who canât stand up for longer periods. Obviously those old people who have canes and shaky legs. At first glance you will notice them.
3. Mother carrying a baby in their arms - Those that who could not afford a stroller, those that carry their baby in their arms.
4. Disabled with amputated legs â very very very very obviousâ¦. They canât stand much longer!
All people have the right to board and sit in the train, they maybe locals, talents, trash, workers, Tired, sickly, healthy, active, alive, tourist, political parties (good and evil) and so on.
Those 4 types of passengers you can read in the signage deserves priority in the designated reserve area. Beyond that is your personal preference.

If only 10 cent is charge or as you said... "seat is not significantly more" and EVERYONE could afford it... then won't the seats again be fully taken... does that solve anything beyond allowing SMRT or SBS a chance to earn abit more from everyone of us ?? :think:

10cent for the elderly or student. Figures are illustrative, not meant to be exact. The second part perhaps I should paraphrase more clearly as "The charge should be such that if one can afford to take MRT, then paying for the seat is not significantly more than the cost of the ride itself".

i can't believe the ridiculousness of charging for a seat. like many have mentioned, it'll causing friction and of course, there will be more complaints of "elitism" and "widening income gap" among others.
what it'll breed is selfishness and a "first-come-first-serve" attitude.
heck, why not let SMRT make some revenue from it all? auction the seats! the moment someone pays more than you, you're ejected from the seat.

Situation arises from
some who are badly brought up, lacking in basic manners and civility.
some who think money talks - if so then they should go buy their own car.
some from other lands where there is no such culture as giving up their seats to the less fortunate, elderly, weak or needy. So to them, being selfish is just being "normal". This is their norm back in their own country.
allowing too many people into the country suddenly, thus the original scope that the MRT was planned for, is way below the actual usage.

Kindness begets kindness, if it we ever have to "pay" for a seat. What a joke to the whole world we will be. That singaporeans need laws like this. Then again its not about face. The sad fact that nobody is gracious enough to do even this simple act of kindness, we should also be gracious enough to not demand for a seat. If you're that tirred or sick, get a cab. Train journeys in Singapore don't go much longer than an hour from end to end. Not like other countrys 3-4hour train ride
1st off... I'm not coming to you with an altitude.
2nd... I've work for one of the 2 rail operator for the last 14 years.... and still work for them.
So let me explain to you why your idea WON'T work...
* Trains and Buses... and to some extend, Taxi.. are PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION... which means that its main purpose is to transport you from point A to point B... comfort is secondary. If comfort is all important to you... then Taxi all the time is the way for you.... You pay for what you get.
* During peak hours... There will ALWAYS be more people trying to rush home... then there will EVER be enough seats on trains or buses... and even Taxis on the Road, for everyone. That is just a fact of life... which is why its called PEAK HOUR.
* Knowing the point ABOVE.... it would be obvious that SEATS will always be in short supply. In fact, a fully pack SMRT Train could squeeze in 1800 passenger... most time only 1600+. Each CAR has around 60-72 seats... which mean a Train has 360-432 seats. With a fully pack train of 1600+ passenger... Up to 1200++ will NEVER have seats even if EVERYONE could afford or is willing to pay for a seat. And if you add more seats... then this just reduce the number of people that could be taken inside the train... which meant more crowded stations and longer wait till you can get onboard a train....
* And if seats for Senior or School Children is only charge 10 Cents... did it cross your mind that all the seats will now be filled with only Seniors or Children ?? Or Worst... with peopke that think money could 'BUY' them special privilege while others could only watch... do remember... Trains and Buses are PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION... NOT a Budget Flight to Bali where paying more get you a seat with more leg room.. NOT EVERYONE need to go Bali.... but almost EVERYONE in S'pore, from some of the rich, not so rich... to the poor, need transportation from home to work everyday.

Oh yeah... something just came to me...
If Seniors or School Children paid only 10 cents and adult... lets said $1 for a seat... anyone thinks that there won't be a brunch of seniors and school children (during holidays)... following the trains during peak hour... and charging Adult Passenger 50-80 cents a seat... by tapping with their cards...
Or better still... If someone is tried... buy 5 seat in a roll... and sleep on it during peak hour...
Sure... it could easily be overcome by a simple computer program that limits only one farecard to one seat... but this would lead to the next question... since I have to pay for a seat (and $$$ talks)... why can't I buy more than 1 seat.... :think:

Then the COE isn't working. because it's super congested on the roads event in the afternoons during the non-peak hours
