I store my camera body, 5 lens, accessories, warranty cards and even my computer hard disks inside my dry cabinet.

I just got a second hand DSLR. The previous owner did not use a dry cabinet but he did put a packet of silica gel inside. Must I get a dry cabinet or just go to Daiso to get a few more packets of silica gel?

i have suffered fungus infected equipments... easily thousands worth of equipment wiped out over 10yrs or so in the store room without any care n concerns... so a electronic dry box is a must for me now... cheers...

I've started off with 1 dry cabinet, and now got 2. The other is to keep the old negatives, photographs, certificates, and important documents.

it's not a compulsory... when i initially got my DSLR... i use those air tight plastic container and put silica gel sachet in them...

but i convert to dry cabinet late last yr, and looking to get a 2nd one / bigger replacement by mid year ;p

It is not compulsory, just to rest your mind in peace. My friends has been using her dslr for 4 month, with only kit lens (means not take down the lens often), also she shoots almost once per week...

Heh heh.....I do not have this problem/requirement. Located where I am the heat is 40C+ for 9 months of the year and humidity is less than 5%

yes it does, as an air conditioned room already has a low humidity

nope, about 5 watts ... definitely cheaper then replacing silica gels in the long run, or repairing/replacing ur equipment if they get damaged ...

If switched off every morning, that could lead to condensation on the equipment?

Don't need to think so much. Get a dri-cab. Like someone said, for a peace of mind.

Dry cabinet is not only for photograpphy equipments... u can store important document, cds, dvds, tapes and even tea leaves inside.. For ppl who value their equipments and stuffs i think it is a must.. Too bad we are in a hot tropical and extreme humid country and not some cold dry countries and dun underestimate fungus.. u can clean it off but the damage to the lens coating is unrepairable.

the lens coating must taste pretty good. =D

that aside,
im wondering what brand to go for... so far it seems akarui is the preferred one... is it?

For a dry box, you'll need to replace the drying agent (i.e. silica gel)
For a dry cabinet, no need to replace anything regularly. Just plug it in, set it for desired humidity level and forget it.

Even with the dry agent, u also need to take out camera n len once a while to prevent the rubber part of the camera n len to dry up...
