how much to clean oly lens?

A world of difference when comparing between the lemon/loaner/good copy's images.

I also say! So which image should a $1.6k lense be EXPECTED to produce?

That I can't say. But I can say that I won't be paying S$1600 just to get those sort of shots which are no better (maybe worst, in fact!) than what I can already get with my 40-150mm Zuiko.
Heck, maybe you can loan someone's 40-150mm and do a comparison between it and your lemon 50-200mm right in front of the Oly support technician so that there won't be any frivolous excuses and reasons anymore.

No kidding, but I did get better IQ from a 40-150mm than the 50-200mm several months back when I tested the two.

So lemon's back? Next time, bring the cam, 40-150 and laptop along. Shoot, if not happy, don't accept.

Nope, the service tech told me they need "another 2 weeks" to wait for the top glass from Japan. Like changing that frontmost piece is going to fix all that internal reflection problems.

Anyway the test picts were all taken right across Oly's service center.

As mentioned, when it's ready for collection, bring along another lens (40-150) shoot, compare. If not happy, don't accept. You are already at the end of your warranty and should not accept any sub standard item. Best if you can get someone along with a good 50-200.

Original: 1/3000 f/4
Loaner: 1/2000 f/4
Good copy: 1/2000 f/4

Loaner/Good Copy taken around 3.50pm, 22 January 2007.

The loaner is better than the lemon but still exhibit slight ghosting and softness.

I had a Tamron lense that exhibited similar problems like your Olympus ZD50-200mm. Sent it to the agent and they shipped back to factory for repair. Came back as a brand new unit with a different serial number.

Did you use any filter with the lense? Some cheap lense filters can cause slight image softness too.

No lense filter was attached to the lenses. REAL BAD filters would probably cause some flaring but not 5-10pixel ghosting.

Sent back the loaner yesterday and requested another usable copy. The loaner had plenty of dust, dirt, fingerprints INSIDE the lense, the zoom ring has a good 2-3deg of free play and the front portion doesn't even retract back completely, leaving about 5-6mm of gap when zooming out from 200.

The service tech insists its a 'good' loaner that has never been repaired. I really wonder how the fingerprints and dust made it INSIDE the lense--they're scattered on almost every lense surface, giving it a 3D asteroid field appearance.

What a good way to promote their product. :(

Apparently there is still no answer to the thread.
I have a few Oly lenses that need to be cleaned. Where do I bring them, beside Oly's agent and how much will it cost me per piece ?

Info much appreciated

Excuse me steve, but did you not read what btfiend wrote?? That was from the loaner he got from Oly. You sure you want to send it to Oly service??

I'm afraid I'm not able to answer your question. I just have something to share about Oly service in other country. It all boils down to how competent are the local Oly service centre personnel when dSLR owners face problems with their equipment.

This real life account happened quite some time ago. I can't remember the details. It's one of those threads in Oly SLR Talk forum, in dpreview. Anyway, a guy experienced having his 50-200mm opened up into two pieces. Something in/on the lens went loose when he was shooting in the field. He uploaded the photo and I was shock to see how the lens had opened up. It happened in Australia. I think the lens was still under warranty. He sent it in for serving thinking it might cost a bomb. In the end, when Oly Australia reviewed his case, he got a 50-200 replacement (can't recall if it was a new lens, it should be). And the owner was totally thrilled. He was glad he bought into the 4/3 system. He openly praised Oly for this good-will extended to him. Unbelievable isn't it? What excellent service quality.

Perhaps, our local Oly Service Centre should send all their technicians for extensive training both in repairing (especially) Oly dSLR equipment as well as how to give excellent customer service to Oly camera owners.

My Olympus lens shows softness on left side of the picture compared to right and centre, Brought it down to the service centre but was brushed off as well. Doubt if I will be spending more on 4/3rds system. Will be considering Canon and Nikon system because follow up service is very important when working with expensive camera systems. Esp Canon, ecause I remember their great service when I was using their film cams.

Ahhh... Australia... where CUSTOMER SERVICE *is* business and it means they serve YOU. In SG customer service is an afterthought and in Olympus SG's case, they seem to be "servicing" their customer in the rear instead.

It could partly be due to the lack of *effective* consumer protection bodies (and laws) that companies seem to think they can get away with gross misrepresentation or offering shoddy products and services.

Maybe so, or maybe its just that one particular service tech with a bad attitude thats dredging the Olympus' name and decades of goodwill through mud?

Don't just read what I wrote. Other CS'ers here have gone through Oly Servicing Hell. If you treasure your pricey Zuiko Digital lenses, do your Oly lenses a favour and get them serviced in an Oly service centre in another country that can do the job right where service techs don't talk to you in a condescending manner or treat you like a retarded fool for investing in Olympus gear.

Welcome to the Oly Service Hell Support Group.

I am seriously considering down sizing my Oly gear (maybe just keep the wide angles and a cheap body) and migrate back to Canon. Back in 2003 If I had known Oly SG's support would be so mediocre I would rather put up with cleaning CCDs regularly and I wouldn't have touched their E-system with a 10 foot pole

It just does not occur to Olympus SG that the quality of after-sale support is a very important consideration in the DSLR market. I don't know how they're going to sell their expensive "PRO" line of lenses or the upcoming "PRO" E-1 replacement body when they evidently are unable to back the buyers with good after-sale support. Imagine buying a $12k ZD 300/2.8 that experienced optical softness or aberrations and the Oly SG tech takes a test shot, tells you the lense is pretty sharp by looking at that crummy little 1.8" LCD and proceed to brush you off as some picky nut case. After some persistence they decide to accept your lense for repair (not knowing what symptoms to look for) only to take it apart on their workshop bench (introducing asteroids and fingerprints) and eventually you end up with a $12k lemon thats worse off than before, and your lense loses its resale value.

Nikon SG support isn't too great (read the Nikon thread about the "Ah bengs and Ah Sengs") but nothing as appalling as Olympus SG. At least Nikon SG's service tech don't try to be half too clever stripping apart a $1.7k 16-element/15-group lense to try their hand at fixing a softness/ghosting problem, all the absence of a dust-free clean room facility.

Canon's support service is still tops in SG for cameras IMHO (I am not affiliated with Canon in ANY way).

Haha... remember the service tech said to me with a straight face the loaner wasn't a post-repaired unit! The asteroids and finger prints must have been from the factory. :bsmilie:

seriously, have ANYONE HERE cleaned their Zuiko lens in oly SG b4?

Any satisfied customers? To be fair to oly SG, if any of you here had good experience with them, speak up lah.

Morning,

I've had 2 experiences with Oly SG till date... although it was BEFORE i bought my DSLR, so kinda OT a bit from the "lens cleaning" bit...

But i found them very patient and attentive, took A BIT long for me to get my P&S back... and when it did get back it was still having the same problem, but they were very apologetic abt it and did repaired it properly the 2nd time round... always service with a smile. :)

But i only dealt with the front counter staff, dun think i actually had the opportunity to speak to the technicians...

It was my positive experience with Oly SG which lead me to buy the E-500... so... we'll see... :dunno:

Cheers,
Eric

customer service is very good (very polite and patient) but the tech support leaves much to be desire.
