i used '1 thousand, 2 thousand.. and so on' ... :o

Sounds laughable to adults, but is quite a serious and puzzling question to the 5 year young mind. They need to visualise with the help of some common activities.

Try this :

a.Take a cup of water and ask her. How long do you take to drink this. Time her quietly in you mind ( one elephant etc).
b. If she takes 10 seconds, tell her that if she drinks 2 cups, it will be around 20 seconds.

Usually works. Have fun.

hmmm think the most logical and sound way is to bring a clock, use a marker and draw between 12 and 4, tell her to look at the second hand movement, the time it take to move from one marker to another will be 20 seconds...hehe take the opportunity to teach the kid on minute and hour as well...5 year old... should be old enough to appreciate these :);)

One MacDonald TV advertisement. 20 second air time slots. So each time she sing one MacDonald ad song it is 20 seconds

Wa! still remember.. i nearly forget liao.

See all the thread and very surprise that most ppls will give ans without considering this is a 5 years old child, which i make the mistake too.

What surprise me most is the answer was very straight forward and simply that most adult will never even consider.:embrass:

I was shock when i post this question and the first person that answer this question got the right answer which is counting to her.(Pls check thread #2)

Sometime we just need to think SIMPLE.:)

Counting to her is one possibility but not the only way....

Firstly, I dun think the concept of time is generally very strong in a 5 yr old. U have to first ascertain if the child can appreciate the exact meaning of "seconds", or even "minutes" and "hours". Does he or she correlate 20secs to be identical to 20 counts and extends this to all other timings, like 100 seconds = 100 counts? If so, this is at best only an analogy to us but to the child, counting numerically is taken to be an identical alternative to seconds ticking by in time, which is of course strictly speaking, not correct.

Also, the question begs if he or she appreciates that the counts have to be in fixed equal intervals?

Ok ok.. I can go on and on... making the subject so didactic... I admit I'm a psychology junkie!
